My HP Pavilion
screen died, it was over 5 years old anyway, so I am going to be buying a new one this weekend. I will not be doing any hardcore gaming, only some web design stuff and downloading music. Prefer a light one.
Anyone point me to any deals that are worth it? Wal-mart - Gateway 15.6" 4gb ram and 500G HD...$398?

Would you elaborate on the scale and scope of your web design work? What programs do you use?

Samsung's current budget laptops are very lightweight for a 15.6" at 5.07 lbs, so i would suggest those.
They have one with an Intel B950 cpu for $400: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=71048&vpn=NP300E5A-A02CA&manufacture=Samsung
and the same laptop with an Intel i3 2350m for $470: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/samsung-samsung-series-3-15-6-laptop-featuring-intel-core-i3-2350m-processor-np300e5a-a07ca-silver-np300e5a-a07ca/10200752.aspx?path=f5f80a81d62ffd2c052e80489fd4171 6en02

Using it mainly for Dreamweaver and photoshop. Might do some video editing. Brand is up in the air but not really loving HP any more. I don't want to go overboard on stuff I don't need, also don't want to realize I am too slow either.
Looking to spend under 500

If you like it to be portable, a 14 inch laptop is typically below 5 pounds...no keypads typically. However, there is less selection at your $500 price point. 15.6 inch laptops are often over 5 pounds....I find them to be a bit on the big side....some have keypads; others don't.
Here's a $499 14 inch Toshiba with an second generation i3-2310M...appears to be about 4.9-5 pounds:

Here's an 15.6 inch Asus...with an i3-2330M. About 5.7 pounds. $530. Limited stock if any. 2 year global warranty I think.

$530 15.6 inch Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520 w/ i3-2350M. About 5.5 pounds. Good build quality IMO (I have the same, but in a 14 inch size with i5-2410M...E420). E420 review: http://www.studentbuyingguide.com/?s=lenovo+e520&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

13.3 inch Asus i3. $549. About 4 pounds. Two models...similar configurations. Has dedicated graphics, GT520M.

If you do a lot of work on Photoshop I would recommend a laptop with a mid-end discrete graphics processor (more the reason to if you're going to edit videos). Even with a GT520M my sister's laptop still lags on occasion when running it.

A 13.3 or 14 inch laptop with GT 540M under $500 is rare....only one that I recall is the 13.3 inch Acer with an i3 and GT 540M....as low as $429 when on sale at Staples...is known for throttling issues when gaming. Too bad that it's not a i5.
Here's a 14 inch Acer with an i5 and GT540M, but costs more at $660.

If you can get one from the Markham location, get the Asus, otherwise get this one: http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/asus-asus-15-6-2nd-gen-intel-core-i3-2350m-laptop-x53e-fs31-cb-black-x53e-fs31-cb/10205835.aspx?path=e50af4f2396c6268008f28123ac765d 5en02
