Hey everyone,

I've been thinking about upgrading my wallet that's falling apart, and was just wondering opinions on..

a) Buying a designer wallet that costs an arm and a leg (or where one would get a cheaper designer wallet)
or
b) Just buying any good old wallet from Winners, Things Engraved, etc

Thanks!

i've had my share of Winner's wallet, (Tommy, CK...) all of them lasted a couple of years before crapping out.

Finally decided to fork over the cash and bought a Burberry wallet off someone on Kijiji. Great wallet and holding out strong so far. I say it's money well-spent.

Just like all of us here, i went through years of having crap wallets, guess, ck, tommy & many more i cannot even remember.

Two years ago i decided to pony it up and bought a Prada Nero Leather wallet. If you ask me, it was the best 240$ (if i remember correctly) i have ever spent on a wallet. It was between that or a Gucci one, so the wife ended up choosing :P

I know people that swear by LV, lasts a long time but I don't like the pattern.

Bought a Gucci wallet, didn't last any longer than my Banana Republic or Coach, all about 5 years. Just bought a new one from Frank and Oak and not liking it too much, too flimsy feeling, the centre of the wallet gives too much.

Used to have an LV Monogram Bifold for about 6 years but then I recently switched to the Tanner Goods Utility Bifold

http://www.tannergoods.com/products/utility-bifold-natural

Leather is really nice and there are just enough slots for me to carry my essentials, don't know how long it will hold up but it does seem very well constructed. I like this more than my LV just because it's very simple and has a clean look to it. Also I love the look of leather as it ages

Glad you decided to get a good solid one. It's worth the money, geniune leather and canvas leather tends to last pretty long. The only thing you have to be concerned about is when the glue (if there was any) will dry out.

I have gone both ways... cheap wallets every year or two... and then I bought a Jean Paul Gaultier back when they made wallets and it lasted me literally ten years. Average it out and it was cheaper per year than the cheap wallets.

Now I have found a third alternative I consider is hybrid of the two. Neither cheap wallets nor brand name... get "A stock". I bought a LV wallet in China off the street market. It costs more than the cheap wallets but not as much as LV charges. It's nicer in quality than the cheap wallets but not as nice as from LV store but close.

To me, this is the best RFD solution. It's funny cuz RFD won't let you BST replica wallets but they allow replica wheels for cars which is actually hazardous to your health and those driving around you but that is a different can of worms.

Good luck with your search.

20 cards? One cheeck must be jacked up by at least an inch.

You might want to empty a 52 card deck box, you'll have a bit of room left.

I'd recommend the Big Skinny, you can get it for about $25. The LV everyone is going on about are absurdly expensive and very feminine. Don't want people to think my wife lent me her wallet to get shopping. ;)

I carry a montblanc westside wallet and I like the quality of the leather. Its been about 4 years already and the wallet is still in very good condition. I should get about 10 years off this one. It's understated with no flashy logo, just a small one on the corner. I bought it duty free thru one of the asian airports and got it at a good price.

I actually like the look of some of these wallets in here.

But when I think of buying one, I ask myself? Why are you buying some expensive fancy wallet? Who's going to see it? Are you trying to impress a cashier or waiter? Doesn't a wallet remain in your pocket for 99.5% of the time?

You can say the same thing about socks, underwear, home deco, etc. etc. In my opinion, if the extra money spent buying an item helps to please your eyes to the point of your brain releasing more endorphins, more power to them.

The extra cash in my wallet releases more endorphins than having a fancy wallet or underwear (LOL) ever would. Again, I recommend the Big Skinny wallets at $25 for a leather one. Lots of room and not bulky.

Items like socks and underwear are things you wear, so you might be spending greater dollars to get greater comfort and a better fit.
With home items like furniture, some items are much nicer to sit on than others.

Socks and furniture, I can understand. Wallets? I still don't get it.

For me a wallet's gotta be highly functional, pleasing to the eyes, feels great in the hands, and very durable. I personally use a pocket organizer. I can carry few bills and most of the cards that I need. Helps me stay organized and not keep random receipts and cards that I don't need. :)

Hey guys, it's really about where you put your wallet I think. I find the putting it in the back pocket and sitting on it all the time breaks it down much faster then let's say putting it in your front pocket. OP where do you place your wallet?

Don't tell me that people pay double, triple or quadruple the amount of money for a CK underwear as opposed to a non-branded pair that looks and feels almost exactly the same for just for "greater comfort and a better fit." You would be kidding yourself. I guess the same goes for the furniture example you mentioned, although I meant more along the lines of home decorations and furnishings (like paintings, lamps, etc.)

When it comes to intrinsic value, it's definitely different strokes for different folks. I personally wouldn't pay more than $50 for a wallet either, but I can definitely see why some people would dish out more for it.

back to the subject, i bought a saddleback bifold about a month ago. my previous gucci i had since high school was crapping out. the gucci fabric was all torn, cracks in the leather here and there.

saddleback say they use full grain leather which, they claim, is the strongest. the inside pockets are pigskin which they say are stronger than leather. and they say it has a 100 year warranty (lol). either way, about $70 shipped, and it looks pretty good. nothing special/baller, but functional.

I bought this and it arrived earlier this week. very impressed with the build quality. only negative is the edges of the metal is sharper than it should be. it hasn't cut me yet but i would espect it to have a rounder edge.

improvements on this if it was more light weight. with the sharp edges and its weight it could probably rip a whole in my pocket in the long run.

the clip is strong on both sides for the money and the cards so there's no way it will fall out. in fact, i worry that they are too tight that it will take a little too much concentration to remove your money, esp when drunk / dark, which is pretty much where i planned to use this money clip instead of carrying my whole wallet when clubbing/partying...

the packaging was way too elaborate for the product... as the whole "as seen on tv" type of plastic welded packaging... kinda like how those monster cables are packaged. a little excessive for a crappy little part like this... but i can see how with the packaging people can sell this for $10-$20 instead of the $3 it cost me.
