I was browsing Amazon.com and came across the Asus Zenbook Prime http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=asus+zenbook+prime

I didn't hear any news about its release, anyone hear anything about this? Is it up for grabs in Canada yet? I can't seem to find it anywhere else.

It's not yet available in Canada, give it a few more weeks and it should be everywhere.
If you need it right away, you might have to head down south over the border to grab it.

I saw NCIX advertising it but I think it is pre-order only. Looks sexy but it a bit much for me.

I have ordered the UX32VD-DB71 from NCIX last week. They have them in stock. I should receive it this week with 8Gig of RAM and a 240 Gig SSD.

The only drawback is that the UX32VD is not made of unibody aluminum (less sexy) but it cost less and could be easily upgraded (unlike other models which have RAM soldered on the motherboard and non-replaceable battery).

NCIX, the only Canadian retailer so far, has them in stock.

I received mine last week and it took about 2-3 business days to arrive in GTA from time of order.

Here is a rather negative review (http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/5/3135319/asus-zenbook-prime-ux31a-review) of the Zenbook Prime from The Verge.

The Zenbook Prime UX31A boldly strides forward, only to stumble again. Asus introduces a brilliant 1080p IPS display [optional] that sets a high bar for every new premium ultrabook, and adds the backlit keyboard we missed, but fails to fix the terrible trackpad, weakens the hinge, stuffs it with cruft, and deadens the audio quality in the process. Parts of the experience feel premium, to be sure, but like the tacky stickers on the palmrest, the cheapness seeps through. There's little excuse in the second generation (of what's otherwise an identical laptop) for this sort of issue — particularly now that the 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $1,199 and there are plenty of Windows-based competitors.

Funny how the review on Anandtech gave it praise. Sounds like fanboyism when reading the review even the commenters said that as well.

Anandtech praised the UX31A in their review. Not sure why it should be compared to the Macbook Air when it doesn't have the option of a 1080p screen and it's not running the same OS. A PC user will still buy a Windows laptop. I am also not aware of too many 13" ultrabooks out there which offer the 1080p screen.

The Verge nitpicked a few annoying things but overall they were relatively happy with the Zenbook Prime from what I can read.

Whats the specialty of prime vs regular Zenbook?

Aside from general specs update, the main attraction is the screen: there's an option for a 1080p IPS screen which for a form factor so small is rare.

UX31A-DB51 is $1099 and comes with i5, 128GB SSD, 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, and IPS Panel.
UX32VD-DB71 is $1299 and comes with discrete video, i7, 500GB + 32GB SSD (but is upgradeable), 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (but is upgradeable to 10GB), and IPS Panel.

I have the latter and am pretty happy with the laptop thus far. I'm in the midst of upgrading the HDD to an SSD and adding more RAM. There is also a guide that outlines how you can install Windows 7 directly on the 32GB SSD to improve performance.

Also need to clarify on a few things. The 1080p screen is not an "option". It's present in all the UX21A and UX31A models.

The screen is only optional on the cheaper, heavier UX32A. It's actually quite a bit heaver. (0.14kg)

Hmm..... I'm split between the two. I don't really mind having the i5 vs i7; and the 128GB SSD is sufficient as I'll store my data on an external drive anyway. It's mainly the RAM that I'm interested in.

4GB vs upgradable to 10GB? Hmm..... Might be enough for me to grab the UX32VD instead.

Yes, the UX32VD-DB71 is a 3rd gen Intel. It is also slightly heavier (3.23lbs) over the UX31A (2.9lbs). From a thickness perspective, it has the same thickness at the back (0.7") but does not taper as much towards the front (0.22" vs 0.12").

It must be if they can fit in an old school mechanical hard drive.

Actually, the mechanical drive is a 7mm Hitachi 500GB Drive which can easily be replaced with any 7mm SSD.

As you yourself said, the construction is different - almost twice as thick at the front - likely to accommodate a easily replaceable drive - the smallest ultrabooks tend to have the SSD directly on the mainboard to save space.

There's a pic of the UX32 in the anandtech link; this one appeals to me b/c of the 3 USB 3.0 connector (vs only 2 in the UX21 & UX31)

It looks like it has near identical specs to the UX31A-db51 except it costs more and has less screen resolution, though it is thinner and might have a faster SSD.

The full review (http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/12/asus-zenbook-prime-ux31a-ultrabook-review/) of the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A ultrabook is up on Engadget now.

Wrap-up

When ASUS first released the UX31E last fall, we found plenty to like in its striking design, high-quality display and brisk performance. The addition of backlighting and a more comfortable keyboard -- not to mention the step up to Ivy Bridge and Intel HD Graphics 4000 -- makes the whole package considerably better.

But that doesn't mean the Zenbook Prime UX31A is now the best. To claim that title, it needs a more usable trackpad, above all else. We still think the MacBook Air is a better all-around ultraportable, as it offers a more comfortable touchpad and keyboard in a similarly attractive package, though we we wish it packed an IPS, 1080p display like the one on the UX31A. And though it's considerably more expensive, you might also be happier with the Samsung Series 9, which lasts longer on a charge, rocks an impressive display of its own and sports a more reliable trackpad. Still, given all the UX31A has to offer, chances are you'll be pleased with your purchase. Just evaluate your patience for temperamental touchpads before you pull the trigger.

Just placed my order for a ASUS UX32VD-DB71 from NCIX :)

Got it for $1199.97 with price match. Its too bad I couldnt get the pricematch at memory express, they were sold out.
I was waiting to see if the price would drop any more but it seems like its just getting higher and higher and its getting sold out everywhere! Afraid I wouldnt get it in time for school.

Also picked up 8GB Corsair ram for it too (CMSX8GX3M1A1600C10) $54.44. SSD can wait.

It's admirable if Asus is distributing these free of charge, but if it were Apple I'm sure we'd hear no end of griping that we needed to use hard to carry, losable dongles instead of having built in ports as God intended. ;)

If you upgrade ssd just make sure you get 7mm version or it will not fit.

There is a way to make a 9mm fit. You have to strip it down and raise it up after using thick double sided tape to about the same size as a 7mm.

ux32vd-db71 (this one is the best to get...)

The VD (http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_577_1044&item_id=050575) is also the least like an ultrabook.

Heavier, thicker, stock old school mechanical hard drive - the only thing it has that is characteristic of an ultrabook is it's big price tag at $1299 (!).

Imho, if you're not going to get all the advantages of an ultrabook, especially a stock SSD, which allows the design to be optimized for size, and if upgradeability is a high priority for you - then you're far better off selecting a more traditional notebook format. For the same money or less, you can get a regular notebook computer close to the size of the VD including an upgrade to an SSD and upgrade to your heart's content.

However if you want a true ultrabook, then pony up the extra $200 for the UX31A-DB71 (http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_577_1044&item_id=051034) (also at Canada Computers) - it comes with the 256GB SSD built-in and is almost half a pound lighter and half as thick.

I got the VD and its great. Looks as thin as a 'real' ultrabook to me. Also super light. Couldnt believe the difference compared to my older HP 14.1" laptop. Gonna upgrade it to 10gb ram and I'll stick an SSD in as well. It will be better specs then any ultrabook out there.
