Hey guy,

Unfortunately, I bought a GPS from Cartoys.ca (Downsview Auto). It's not really the greatest, but it's not the most expensive either--so I guess I got what I deserved.

Anyway, the install was very easy. Everything works alright, but when I am using the GPS feature I cant get it to give me Turn-by-Turn speech direction. It shows there are 2 voices, but none of them work? Does anyone have this problem? I checked all the settings and nothing is off. The only thing I can think is that they loaded the files wrong on the SD card...

They just gave me the SD card after they copied it from the computer; I put it in, told the GPS which path to look at and started it up. Do I have to install the voices somehow?

Any help is appreciated as it is useless without the voice...

surely there was an owners manual and set up instructions? surely there was a 1-800 number for customer support? surely the retailer backs their product?
I mean, you don't even let us know what brand or model the GPS unit is so how could RFD readers possibly help?

Surely, you are wrong on all accounts. If I knew the model I would tell you. No, the retailer doesn't really back the product. I read some bad reviews about these guys, but I figured it was easy enough to install and I'm pretty tech savy so I thought I'd figure it out.

The actual GPS APP is IGO Primo. I downloaded some extra voices to see if that would help, but it goes be an "unsupported voice error."

Is the GPS plugged into your speakers using a harness or something? If not you might need to tune into a special FM channel using your radio. Assuming this doesn't replace your radio etc. Usually with these types of setups the turn by turn navigation should be built into the system. These guys may not back their product, but surely they can tell you what to do to get something working.

yes, it's plugged into the speakers. I have a feeling its an APP problem and not an installation problem. if i use the radio or cd player, it works fine. all the settings on the gps are set correctly. I edited the system file for the GPS app and now it recognizes more voices, but it still has no sound.

So my next question to everyone is: Does someone have experience updating (fooling around with) IGO Primo GPS software?

Sounds like a chinese windows CE based GPS. I have one of those too in my car, running ig08 2009. Try to find a forum where others have used the same unit. Sometimes, you need to edit some config files on the SD card.

Well-known issue.
Try adding this to sys.txt:
[sound]
csv_voice_enabled=1

I really hope you get it working
If you do, please post the solution to help others

Just curiosity - I wonder why you decided to go with Cartoy.ca and not others, there are several unhappy people in the GTA that have posted negative reviews for Cartoy (even you mentioned it on your post). Did they offered you the best price? No tax? What was the deal?

The other company that advertises in Kijiji is http://www.jcautosports.webs.com/ , did you consider them? I was thinking about getting a GPS unit from them, they can install it too

Aren't their prices a bit crazy?

Well, with all those negatives and you still bought it, I guess you got what you paid for LOL.

Crazy as in high prices?

I think that the prices for the no-brand-name GPS units that fit-just-like-OEM are competitive with anyone else in the GTA (similar to Cartoy, ebay, etc)

This is the price list

It depends on car brand.

Here is one of the quotes I've got for Chinese GPS for Mitsubishi Outlander:

Thanks for your inquiry, my friend,I'm Eric from Shenzhen Lianzhongtong Electronics , a professional manufacturer of car dvd players, we know that you are looking for Outlander car dvd players with android, it's a pity that the android models can't work with canbus at present, so we can't use android in Outlander, but we can suggest you to use ARM 11 platform with WIN CE 6.0,it would be much cheaper and stable, for Outlander with DVD,GPS, Analog TV, SD card with map,Canbus,ARM 11 , it would need only 288 USD, while the freight fee to Canada would be just 97 USD, so the total cost is just 385 USD , does it match your needs ? if you decided to get it, we can make a PI to you , hope to cooperate with you , any questions, feel free to contact us ,please.

Best Regards

You are joking considering $600 before tax competitive to ebay items like this $409.99 one (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/8-DVD-GPS-player-SWC-iPod-BT-Control-2007-2011-MITSUBISHI-OUTLANDER-/261048242712?pt=US_Video_In_Dash_Units_w_GPS&hash=item3cc7b01218), right?

I was also looking for in-dash gps for my car for a long time, but with the price & installation, instead, I bought a 7" wifi tablet which can be used as gps, movie player, browsing web/email,..etc, also you can take anywhere. :) Very satisfied.
