Hi everyone, I was looking to buy a used smaller truck/suv around or less than $10k and was wondering what people's thoughts, experiences, or what they've heard. I'd prefer Japanese, and thinking of a Toyota Tacoma or possibly Nissan X-Terra pre 2005. I'd like to do some off roading, nothing too crazy, but gravel and muddy roads. I'd consider a Rav4 or CRV but my hesitation with either of those is that if I am off road those two have limited ability from what I understand.

Any thoughts or advice? Thanks! :)

For a SUV off roading, I would definitely avoid the RAV4 and CRV (excluding 2012+). These have slip and grip type systems. For true off roading, you would need a 4WD with low. Jeep Liberty or Wrangler and any 4x4 trucks...these are the best off roaders. Lesser off roading SUVs would include Mitsubishi Outlander (2007+...probably over your $10K budget here in BC....cheaper in the east; has low mode) and 2005-06 Nissan X-Trail (however, these are better than RAV4 and CRV for off roading). Subaru Forester is another one to consider.

I have a Ford Ranger 4x4, but I hardly go off roading. Have been on forestry and muddy roads on rare occasions. Mud pits were kinda fun, but messy :)

Suzuki Grand Vitara is your bet. You can get a late model year for 10k and will off-road better than any small suv other than the Xterra, Jeep or FJ Cruiser

Or, if you are looking for something a bit smaller/nimble in jungles, go for a Suzuki Jimny. It is sold as a Chevy Tracker locally, it is a 4x4 with serious offroad gear, low range, 4WD etc.

I like Mitsubishis, so I am also going to recommend the Mitsubishi Pajero. Its the Japanese equivalent of the Range Rover.....

If you dont mind right hand drive, you can also try those Pajero io/mini imported from Japan. Those were light and pack some offroad capabilities.
