What happens if you don't pick up package from Canada Post? Does it get returned to Sender? Can't seem to find a clear response on their FAQs.

when a delivery attempt is made, but the recipient is not available to accept the delivery, a Delivery Notice Card is left indicating where the item can be picked up;
when a Final Delivery Notice Card is issued if the item has not been picked up at the post office;
when an item is not deliverable because it was shipped to an incorrect address, or the recipient refused to accept the delivery, or the item is unclaimed at a post office, the shipment will be returned to the sender or sent to the Undeliverable Mail Office;

What Is Undeliverable Mail?

Undeliverable Mail is mail that, for any cause, cannot be delivered to the addressee.

1.1
When is Mail Considered Undeliverable?
Mail is considered undeliverable if:

it does not display a complete and valid address
it is addressed to a non-existent address
the addressee has moved without providing a change of address or the Change of Address Notification (COAN) has expired
it is refused by the addressee
it is refused by the addressee, bears a return address, and is refused by the sender
the addressee refuses to pay postage due charges
it is prohibited by law
it is an item found loose in the mail
it is an empty wrapper or carton.
Contract Customers must consult their Customer Guide at canadapost.ca/customerguides to obtain detailed information on when mail will be treated as undeliverable for a particular service.

1.2
What Happens to Undeliverable Mail?
Each item will be opened and if it is determined that the item:

has no obvious value, it will be destroyed
contains merchandise with value and a forwarding address can be found, the item will be priced as required and forwarded to either the sender or addressee. If an address cannot be found, the item will be sold (or otherwise disposed of) by Canada Post and the proceeds deposited to the credit of Canada Post
contains cash, the money will be deposited to the credit of Canada Post. If a forwarding address can be found, the cash will be converted to a postal Money Order, the item will be priced as required and forwarded to either the sender or addressee
has contents that are prohibited by law, the item will be disposed of or turned over to the appropriate policing agency.
Undeliverable items that originate in the United States or other countries will be returned to the Undeliverable Mail Office of the country of origin.

All Customer enquiries concerning undeliverable mail must be directed to Customer Service at 1.800.267.1177.

Thanks. Wonder how they judge "has no obvious value, it will be destroyed"...what if someone mails you $100 in a piece of paper.

What if your delivery notice card is stolen or flew off? I always wonder about that :confused:

This happened to me with UPS. I went on vacation and told my gf to pick up the package with the delivery notice. When I came back asking where the package was, she said there was never a delivery notice. I called UPS and they said 3 attempts have been made with a notice left each time. Living in apartment building, I'm sure this happens a lot. The package wasn't returned to the original sender and when I called UPS asking where the package was, they just said it was too late to be picked up and is destroyed. More like an employee takes it. The package was valued at $500

They usually give out another one, a warning, if the holding period is about to end.

Hypothetically if you lose your delivery notice card, they hold the item at the retail outlet for 2 weeks, and then they mail out another card to you telling you the item is there for pick up. I think then they hold it another week or two, and then ship it return to sender.

Packages are normally returned to the sender unless there was no return address. Where I used to work we had a problem with Purolator delivering to apartments. They would not leave a notice due to privacy reasons they claimed, so the recipient never knew a delivery was attempted and didn't go to pick up the package. These packages were then all returned to us and we were charged for the return shipping. I can't see any legitimate delivery company not returning an item if they were unable to deliver unless of course there is no return address.
