I thought I'd post this here and see if I get any recommendations for a rental unit for an aging couple in their 70s who want to stay independant (not me obviously) :)

Since they don't drive, I'm thinking of how in the 1900s people lived in a community where everything was walking distance.

So this is the checklist that i've come up with:
1 - Decent, safe neighbourhood
2 - Nice condo building and not run down, preferably newer construction
3 - close walking distance to supermarket
4 - close walking distance to neighbourhood stores
5 - Halaal butcher in one or more of these stores
7 - Close proximity (preferably walking distance) to a muslim community center that at the very least does Friday prayers
8 - Close proximity to streetcar or subway (this takes the west end out of the picture. they won't be able to handle waiting in the cold for an hour for a bus in mississauga or etobicoke at a bus stop)

Someone was telling me that this would narrow down my choices to Bloor and Danforth or Scarboro, but I haven't been able to find anything specific. I thought I might get some help here.

Yonge and Finch maybe? There are lots of condos built there within the last 15 years. Lots of stores around.

Check out the World on Yonge towers that are being built at Yonge and Steeles in Thornhill.

They're suppose to be a shopping plaza and grocery store on the lower level. It has easy access to transportation and it's much cheaper than Yonge and Finch or Sheppard. The future north subway line will be accessible from this new complex "one day".

My elderly Parents have bought a condo there and are moving from a detached home and they are ecstatic about the development.

Isn't this a JEWISH area?

I DO NOT THINK YOU'll FIND ANYTHING MUSLIM THERE LOL

Muslim area? Then Overlea is the best bet. You will find it as if living in Muslim world. Many women with completely covered and some even with those masks. Men in long religious beards. Next would be Don Mills-Sheppard.
Or Markham and Eglinton or Markham and Lawrence. Victoria Park/Lawrence.
Or if you want little mixed then anywhere from Don Mills-Markham on Shepard or Finch.

But Overlea will be choice...And I think Target is coming there.

OVERLEA area
-----

Yes Target is replacing the Zellers there.

Not sure how safe it is - there was a shooting at that mall last year - but to be fair I've never felt unsafe when I go through the area to go for Bamiyan Kabob runs. The apartment, Leaside Towers, looked to be very well-run when I toured it. The area is very dense so there should be an active community life but public facilities probably have not kept up with the population.

LOL. They are moderate in their religious views. So beards and masks are not a prerequisite. I think it would actually make them uncomfortable to be in an overly-religious/zealout area. However proximity to a place of worship is important since they won't be driving. Its like going to Church on Sunday morning - At the very least they have to go to the mosque on Friday.

I appreciate the suggestions.

Actually there are many Muslim stores/Halal restaurants on Yonge between Steeles and Finch. In fact there's at least one plaza that's all Persian. I don't know specifically about a place of worship in walking distance but transport is good enough that I'm sure they could get to one without too much difficulty.
