Thanks (given) OP.
I usually find most of my Canon lenses in excellent used condition for considerably less, but some like the 50mm 1.4 here are usually about this price used as well.
That said, I recently discovered the magic of old manual lenses fitted to my 40D with an adapter. I "splurged" and paid $100 for the 40-year old, solid metal/glass wonder known as the Super Multi Coated Takumar 50mm 1.4 (most of these older lenses are much cheaper) and I've never taken better pictures. The manual focusing is a lot more work and I miss the shot sometimes because I was "just off", but the ones that I nailed are stunning. I just got a mint 135mm 3.5 SMC Takumar for $60 on eBay which I can't wait to try out. The other thing I noticed is that I became more of a photographer when I had to think about my compositions and manually adjust the focus, aperture and ISO. I learned more in one weekend than I had in the 3 years previous since I started up with photography...
A few fun links, just because it's Friday (wha?):

Sorry if that seems like a threadcrap - wasn't meant to be, since manual shooting is definitely not for everyone...

I am a nikon user, but these lenses seem like pretty good deal. But you are right, used lenses can be considerably cheaper!
As for manual focus, you can get one of those split-screen viewfinders to go into your camera which helps indicating whether or not your shots are in focus. If you get into more manual lenses it might be a good investment!

Thanks for the tip. I just came across an article on that as well - something to definitely look into. I've been so impressed with the Takumars so far that I am also now thinking of abandoning the Canon world and buying a Pentax K20D, K-7 or K-5 and continuing to explore the many, many Pentax and compatible lenses out there (AF ones as well).

i would think manual is good (only to certain types of photography), i am a wildlife/bird watcher or like to take photos of them, manual is not ideal

i love my pentax! a new k30d is coming out soon which has focus peaking. i have tried replacing my focusing screen before but i got too much dust inside the viewfinder now :/. i have contemplated selling my manual focus lenses before, but now that k30d is coming out, i might just keep them around! if you decide to take the pentax route, check out the Pentax A series lenses as it will allow you to use aperture priority mode.
