Painting Vinyl Windows

Does anyone know if you can paint vinyl windows? I am repainting my front door/garage and I want to paint the window frames (currently just white vinyl). Is this a bad idea? Will I have to sand the frame before painting or can I just paint it like a regular wood frame window? Will the paint start to peel after some time?
