Few months ago, I started 2 threads about the sad state of RIM:
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/rims-slide-continues-1182938/
and
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/would-u-buy-rims-playbook-99-if-happens-1082660/
Well, today pre-market: RIMM = $7.81, Down $1.32 (14.46%) after announcing horrible financial results yesterday.
So sad to see this unfold. It looks like RIM is on its death bed ?
What do RFDers think ?
Hope I'm wrong.

If everyone on RFD who started a thread about the possibility of $99 Playbooks were to give a $1 to RIM, then RIM would be profitable again.

Playbooks at $99 ... no thanks. If they could run Windows 8, then yes!

There is no point in buying anything that has NO future. Not sure what the playbook does that a nice Samsung Android or iPhone can't do.
The Playbook, if it cannot be modded to take Android OS (ICS, V4.0) or Windows 8 (or OS modded for Playbook) has ZERO value, except as a paper weight.
We need to realize EVERY enterprise/origanization in the world in the next 12 months are going to demand from their IT department a migration plan away from BB. (A plan that will be executed in the following 24 months.) Enterprises will stay with BB if Microsofts steps in (buys/takeover) and offers some reassurances. But then WinMob 8 is already far superior than anything RIMM has in development.

you cannot put Android on the Playbook because it has a locked boot loader. Rim is known for their security and so far no one has been able to crack the security. As long as the bootloader is locked we won't see android on the playbook

What security? They've given ENCRYPTED BIS information to the US government many times. Their reputation for security has been scrutinized many times. I think Obama still uses a BB:cheesygri

Is there a way to hack a playbook and put android on it? Would be amazing with it.

Considering people went nuts for the Touchpad fire sale and they're still going for around $200 used, this statement is hardly true.

RIM is pretty cool they sent me a free Playbook but I gave it away and never used the physical tablet. I used their emulator instead and would rank from my experience, from top to bottom
#1 Android
#2 Windows
#3 RIM
#4 WebOS
#5 Apple

First, $99 for a 16GB would be a reality if there was any stock from RIM...which there isn't, so the $199 price point stays unless the stores that still have stock blow them out (which hasn't happened in any store around here that still has stock). They still have warehouse stock of the 32 and 64 GB models which were selling at a little above cost anyway so I can't see these going for less unless RIM sells the company and the new owners blow them out. They are still committed to an LTE model which will probably come out when the full version of OS 2.1 is released. That shouldn't be too long as the developer beta of 2.1 was released some weeks back and presumably has it's bugs ironed out. Now, as for BB10, as far as I'm concerned, that is a phone OS and though it will be loadable onto the PB, it's a non issue for me. I still use my PB every day and I'm not about to dump it for a $200 tab running Android apps that I will probably never use. I learned my lesson with the PB and all those converted Android apps I eventually removed as I never used them. I do play games but mostly into games requiring a laptop or desktop which is why the MS Surface looks good...but only the full Windows 8 model that will probably cost $1K anyway as it competes with Ultrabooks. At that point, there will be no more need of apps for me or anyone else using that device as all the Windows programs will run on it. Then I will be able to kiss Apple and Android tabs goodbye...

Buy a Playbook for $99? Maybe last year. But as of now, it is obsolete.

I love those statements that buying what they term old or obsolete isn't the way to go. Better tell that to all the old art, car, etc. Collectors who are blowing millions on old and/or obsolete. Heck, now I see so many 20.And 30 year olds buying vinyl discs and plants pressing new discs more and more as we speak. There is a brisk market in old electronics among collectors and hobbyists. I love old stuff. My house was built in 1929! It's 30C outside but is very comfy inside with no air conditioning. In winter, it's very warm to the point that the heating costs are very low. Maybe those folks who built this place meant it to last? Not obsolete at all...

I got a refurbished playbook for about $99 in the US with everything included (box etc.).
Compared to people that spent around $500+ for their IPADs and continue to spend more to upgrade to newer versions etc. I would say I got my money's worth as it does enough.
Now looking at the Nexus 7 Tablet.

That is the business of marketing. People fall for it. Apple can release the Iphone 4 Triple G with the equivalent of a minor patch upgrade and people will be all over it,
Verizon is #1 in the US and it does not use GSM/Sim Cards. Not everyone will buy into the smart phone/tablet craze. Many people just need a phone to talk and text and that is it. If they need to check email or facebook they can during work hours or at home on their laptops. Business use is a different story and IMO where the tablets/smartphones can provide value. However a highschooler with an ipad with 3G data costing $75+ a month to check facebook during school hours?

it wasn't android emulator, it was the Playbook emulator for PC to test out PB apps if you didn't have a PB

Are we saying the BB Playbook will become a collector's item?
I'm saying NO to the Playbook @ Jun/2012, because the tablet world is changing. We have MS about to release Win 8 tablets, Google preping a tablet , Amazon selling tablets too.
As tablets become more mainstream, we need apps, otherwise it is a browser. (And we can easily browse with our smartphones.)
There will be no more apps for playbook. And likely no more developement from RIMM. Any developer support they had has evaporated with the recent quarterly annoucement.
It is likely RIMM will need to discontinue their Playbook just to save cash in order to survive - in 3 - 6 months. This BB Playbook has been a huge CASH drain. (Look what HP did to the entire Palm division when they realized the market was not profitable.)
Another sign of RIMM's mis-management ... how long did it take HP to cut it's loses with Palm? How long has this Playbook saga dragged on? (We all know it is a failure as a product.)

Not defending RIM's mis-management what more apps do we need that all the current tablets do not already have for personal use? Whether it be Galaxy, IPAD, Asus, Google etc. I understand there is major initiatives to penetrate into the corporate market for business use but that's another topic.
How many Angry Bird Games do we really need?
If a tablet already has a browser, office productivity suites, E-Reading capabilities, video watching/streaming capabilities will a newer release tablet somehow introduce an 'upgraded' version of all of these applications and more?

Better battery life
higher screen resolution
better graphic performance
faster cellular radio -> LTE
I/O addiitons -> bluetooth 4.0
All reasons why hardware will continue to evolve.

That was because we can load Android onto the Touchpad. If it wasn't possible the Touchpad would be far more useless than the Playbook. Android makes a device invaluable.

This is the same as saying we should keep our old PCs running Windows 95. (Yes, I agree it is useable ... but would we want to?) :)
Lets see why not ... IE has evolved since then. Can the IE browser in Win95 support the programming features many web sites now use? Can it handle new versions of Flash/Shockwave? Current HTML exentions/features?
Does the Office compatibility pack extend to Office 97? That is allows Word/Excel 97 to open Office 2010 files?
Does McAfee, even offer virus updates for their s/w that runs on Win95? (I mean how many of us would let our parents browse the internet & send email on a Win95 PC?)
This is just a sample what what happens when you have an OS platform that gets orphaned. And the Playbook OS hasn't even been around long enough to get any developer following.
This is why the Playbook is useless in the future, unless it can run Win8 or Android.
Although, RIMM is committed to BB10 for its phones. It cannot continue to pump money into a dead product like the Playbook. RIMM has to cut costs ... one logical place is to drop a failed product like the Playbook.

Completely understand the maturity of technology but I was trying to refer to how these new waves of models/OS's with fast releases are just being pushed out for money grabs. People will buy it though regardless.
It is more along the lines of a newer model (Android or Iphone) or version (Honey Comb, Ice Cream etc.) every year (almost) and if its really worth upgrading. The Iphone/Android models are a great example.
Example:
The E-Reader works great right now on my current tablet . Will a new Android OS upgrade flip the pages 0.5 seconds faster or something?
Will The new IPAD play angry birds faster the previous IPAD? etc.
