Want to get a Galaxy S3 and my current carrier is Rogers. A few questions

1. am I at Rogers mercy when it comes to software update rollouts?
2. can I unlock the phone?
3. as there is some chance I might move to the US, will an unlocked Rogers S3 work on AT&T, Sprint, whatever?

#1 is most important question. The other two are really small fries when it comes to moving to a new country...

1. Yes, and no. Yes if you wait for official updates. No if you plan to root, install clockwork mod, and a custom ROM from XDA-developers.

2. Yes. You can get it unlocked from third party sources for a fee, or perhaps in a couple weeks there will be an app to unlock it for free like GS1 and 2.

3. It will work with AT&T and on 2G for T-mobile. Or their MVNOs. Sprint and Verizon, no chance.

Has Rogers been good about bringing out updates? I had an HTC magic once and it was awful.

They aren't as fast as international versions of the phones getting updates but pretty decent. My captivate went from Eclair to Froyo to GB in about 13 months. Not so bad.

But un-official way will always be faster. Even compared to international version of the phone.
