Is anyone using a tablet plan for their cellphone? And relying on Dell Voice for their phone needs?
I hardly ever talk on the phone; though I'd probably miss SMS and voicemail.
Telus/Bell have flex tablet plans for $35 up to 5GB. Will this work on a phone? Thanks.

I am using one on Telus. The hard part for me was to get them to activate it on my phone (told them I will buy a tablet soon) and transfer my number from prepaid. They also questioned me when I asked to add a texting package and Caller ID (used on phones only). Everything now works (including voicemail) though voice is charged at $1 / min

How does Telus come to know that you are using a tablet not a smartphone?

Why not get a pay as you go 35 cent a minute plan and then get a data add-on. I have that with Virgin. I pay $10 a month for 100mb but they have larger plans as well. Not sure it compares with the tablet plan but you'd have a "real" phone if you need it and the data coverage is spotty.
I just did a quick search. 1gb at Virgin as an Add-on is $35 a month. A Bell Tablet plan gives you 5gb for the same price minus the phone features of coarse.

It's more expensive...
Here is the calculation...
1) Paygo voice + data
Pay go plan, minimum top up = 100/year + 911 fee + tax ==> pay around $10/month...
1GB data = $35/month
Total = $45/month ==> almost same like regular monthly plan, you better sign 3 years contract and get subsidy phone...
2) iPad/Tablet flex data plan only
Up to 10MB is $5
10MB to 100MB is $10
100MB to 500MB is $20
500MB to 5GB is $35
If you're low usage user, you might only use 500MB/month and pay only $20/month...

For me the main reason was that I wanted to have roaming, and it's only available on postpaid accounts. Data on postpaid is expensive, so I wanted the cheapest possible option even though now I have to pay for CallerID which was free on prepaid)

If you use less than 500M, you can go with Telus or Rogers prepaid, it gives you 500M for $25, or $30 for 1G, $5 more than tablet plan for 500M, but you do get voice as a back up in case you needed, dell voice is not very reliable.
Also, the amount you pay for the data will be deducted from your top ups, so you don't have to pay an extra $10/month if you don't use the voice and text. The main drawback is that there is no flex data plan on prepaid, and also if you more than 1g, prepaid is not an option.

Why go with virgin prepaid when the big 3 (Telus) offer you 1g for $5 less ($30) and voice minutes is only 20 cents per minutes with data add on.

An idea plan for me would be flex data plan for phone on top of prepaid, so no voice add on, too bad no carrier offers that.

You can activate a tablet plan without any issue and use it with a phone.
As long as you have isp.telus.com as the APN (I believe that's the correct APN for tablet).
I had a friend who was charged $499 for using data on his iPad.
When he called into tech support, they change the APN and the charges mysteriously disappeared.
I think it was isp.telus.com or sp.telus.com (one of the two -- I can confirm tomorrow).

My company has given me a BB for work. Lucky me :(
So I don't need voice/txt anymore on my personal phone (contract ends August 2013). I'm contemplating on transferring my contract to someone else if there are data plans that can beat my plans value ($32.50+HST for 500MB Data+Voice)? I'm considering the 7-11 Speak Out $10 Unlimited Browsing Plan, but reading from the huge thread it requires a lot of tinkering and some applications still don't work.
My personal phone's plan:
$32.50+HST
500MB Data
200 min voice
unlimited evenings starting at 5pm & weekends
unlimited outgoing txt/pic/video msging
call display with name display
visual voice mail

voip on 3g/4g can be hit and miss, especially if you are using this for inbound calls.
Anywhere the are lots if people, like shopping malls, theaters, etc, or if you are in a car, the voice quality will be bad.
Standby battery life can also be very bad, maybe 4-5 hours unless your voip provider supports tcp signalling.
I figure I got around a 60% success rate for voip on 4g/3g

You actually don't HAVE use the $100 top up for talk only, you can use it for your data plan. Only if you plan to make phone calls, you need to top up some extra to get minutes... but it doesn't have to cost you $10/m if you don't use minutes. You can top up $100 every 3.5 months and only use that for your 1 GB data plan. That way, you don't pay more than $30 per month... reasonable if you ask me. Hope that helps, I'm not always clear :)

I just activated a telus tablet plan on my galaxy S2x and it works great so far, 4g speed on the above apn (isp.telus.net). Im wondering if anyone has tried the fido ipad plan on a phone? It has somewhat better levels to the flex data... up to 1gb for $25 vs telus at .5gb for $20

Rogers/fido used to check for valid imei for ipad plans. Moving the sim to another device didn't work.
Check for the latest info on modmyi forums. It probably won't work, try Telus or Bell instead

This is good information to know about.
Would you have the link to the modmyi thread? A friend is looking for an all data plan.

Hi DJDiggler,
did you try skype or any voip like dellvoice, I want to confirm when you has the incoming call, can you direct the ringtone to a bluetooth headset, or some way that you can get notification without disturb other. I test my rogers data only sim on ipad2 3g, I can get the call and the ring from the speaker, but need to touch the screen to accept the call then it can direct the voice to headset.

Hi, I've only used csipsimple to connect to my VoIP.ms account... and only to make outgoing calls so can't really help with your question. I know the above app has a "integrate with phone" option... maybe that will work? Sorry I can't offer much help!

thanks for your reply,
what i find so far the dellvoice has a option to port my cell number to them and make free call in canada. I have tested many call for the last few weeks both in and out are ok, and I can also forward the call to 2 or 3 number at the same time. this case I can get the call or make it as voice mail too.
compare this to what i paid for rogers basic phone bill, i have to ask myself why not to join the data plan for 17 to $37 max and i can get almost everything.
if anyone find a better solution please share too.
thanks.

I got an extra sim from Rogers to share my data plan with my iPad. Put the sim in my GF's Galaxy SIIx and it works with Dell Voice. The CSR asked me if it was for the LTE ipad. Apparently they need the IMEI for the LTE devices.

Its to check compatibility. LTE has different flavors. A Verizon LTE device doesn't work on Robelus
