Trying to size up a new PSU for my new HTPC monster rig.

What I have so far in terms of components:
1. Asus P9x78 Deluxe
2. 3930k - 120w/250w idle/load
3. 16 Gigs RAM
4. 3 plain old WD/Seagate HDs and an SSD
5. Likely a 7870 AMD gfx card or a 670

Likely overclocked a bit.

Using the online calc I'm coming up around 650w recommended at peak (600 at 90% optimal) so will probably opt for a 750-800w unit to play it safe and in case I stuff another gpu in there.

My constraints are that the PSU should ideally be less than 180mm in length (though I can probably hack at something to make it fit) and should be on the quiet side.

Would going for a 1000w unit be overkill? PC will be on likely 24/7. Or should I stay within the above limits for efficiency.

Also any good PSUs anyone can recommend that might fill the above? Modular is a must as is reliability.

CC has an Antec CP-1000, a 1000 watt PS, for $89....looks like that it's out of stock. That's a great price for a 1000 watt PS. They also have the CP-850 for $89 with stock.

Here are a couple of reviews:

I'd recommend one of these units, it's a Seasonic M12D platform in there and under 180mm deep: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=66287&vpn=M12II%20850&manufacture=Seasonic%20Electronics#CustomerReviews

Thanks. I was actually almost decided on the Corsair AX850 for a little extra change. Wonder which is better.

Thanks. I was actually almost decided on the Corsair AX850 for a little extra change. Wonder which is better.

Both Seasonic units, the AX850 is based on the X-series platform while the other is the older M12D series. As a result, the AX850 is more efficient (gold vs bronze certified) and includes a 7 year instead of the 5 year warranty. I don't think you can go wrong either way, but if you don't mind the extra cost the Corsair's extra warranty is probably worth the difference alone.

There's also an XFX M12-based unit for a little less than the Seasonic branded one, and is 80Plus silver certified: http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=15180AC8651&vpn=P1850BNLG9&manufacture=XFX
