Im in a basement apt right now and using a window A/C to cool my office.

its a basement apt with easy access to the 4 ft by ft 4 window from outside. In the past I was not willing to leave the A/C in the window when we were away for the weekend as I thought it was a sign to thieves that a window was open

But now Im thinking for a thief wouldnt it be easier/faster to break a window then push an A/C out of the way. Because we are renting, the A/C cant be secured to the frame so pushing it in is very easy.

If you were a thief would you rather push a window A/C in or break/jimmy a window?

Well, they'd have to know it's not screwed into the frame.
And if you cant screw into the wall, why not make a frame on each side that it attaches to.
Think of it like "the club", it makes the AC too large to fit through the window either way (except from removing the screws you can access from the inside only)

I'd rather push it in... Breaking glass is a total heat-score, not to mention all the shards will be waiting for you when you go through the window.

Do what aqnd said, there's ways to make it not able to pass through the window without actually attaching it.
