It’s the morning after a long weekend of Pride and Canada Day celebrations, and Toronto beaches have mutated into places only Oscar the Grouch could love — sandy goldmines of trash.

Strolling down the Sunnyside boardwalk early Tuesday morning was like walking through a crime scene. Trash was everywhere you looked or stepped, evidence of thousands of litterbugs who had a great time by the shore the night before but decidedly left their garbage behind.

In addition to the usual beach rubbish of beer bottles and pizza trays, there were remnants of fireworks, toppled garbage cans, Tupperware containers of discarded food and piles of trash sitting unusually close to garbage cans that weren’t full.

“I’m appalled, I thought we were civilized people, why would you just drop your garbage?” asked Sarah Doucette, councillor for Ward 13, Parkdale-High Park.

Some strollers might pick up garbage they see along the way, shake their heads, curse under their breath and toss it into its rightful place. But picking up after Torontonians is mostly the job of city workers.

“The staff realize that it’s going to be busy, they don’t dread it because they know what they are getting into when they sign up to clean down there,” said Darrell Vossen, general supervisor for waterfront parks at Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation. “It’s busy, but they get satisfaction out of providing a service to the public.”

Cleanup crews got to work at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. And with all the celebrations over the weekend, there was a lot of work to do.

Usually, the beaches — from just west of Sunnyside Beach to Woodbine Beach — would be cleaned by 10 a.m., said Vossen. But on Tuesday, the workers were still picking up trash at 2 p.m.

So with long-armed trash pickers in hand and their beachcombing tractors running, workers spent eight hours cleaning up after others in the 31C heat.

“City staff can do what they can, but why are they picking up after the public’s garbage?” said Doucette.

She said the littering habit must change, particularly the herd mentality that results in garbage being thrown into a pile outside a trash can.

“My grandma would have gone down there with an umbrella and made people pick up after themselves,” she said. “It’s not just the mess and filth, it’s the wildlife that we also have to take into consideration.”

Littering isn’t limited to long weekends. Other festivals and events are bedevilled by it, and there’s not much the city can do.

“What are you going to do?” Doucette asked. “There are already signs that say don’t litter, don’t dump and things. And people complain that we have too many signs, do we need to spend extra time and energy to put on a campaign saying put your garbage in the bin? I thought we were beyond that.”

One solution, she said, is to make sure children learn to pick up their trash, and then they can educate their parents. “I think it’s sad people don’t take pride in their local spaces.”

Wow so messy and sloppy! A lot of peeps are real slobs, I've seen some who won't turn off a faucet and some that throw garbage beside the can instead of in it! Why would peeps not throw the garbage in the can on purpose? Do they like to see garbage all over or something? Is messy their style?

It is expected when you have that many people attending an event in the city. It's not as bad as people that flick their cigarette butts out the car window. Those people should be charged and perhaps sent to jail.

Wait till caribana and the lakeshore bike trail gonna smell for a whole month.

And since we are on this subject, what's up with dog owners? Small portion of dog owners bag their dog poop but then throw it back on the ground.

Large events are not the norm. Whenever you get large amounts of people one one location, add some alcohol, and a reason to celebrate and there isn't the capacity to handle it. Look at the next day after new years or after a team win a championship, they are out cleaning all of the garbage on the street. This happens in every city.

As for Toronto in general....I was walking around City Hall yesterday and there was no garbage around...same with my neighbourhood...

The people who leave their crap outside the garbage cans are probably the same a**hats who take their garbage to the garbage room in my condo and then leave them on the floor. I don't understand this behaviour. >:(

I'd agree with that. When it's not your own $hit, people don't give a $hit...do that to their backyard and those same people littering will be up in arms threatening you with bodily harm.

This is true and many are local Toronto people and not outsiders.

Toronto people are self centered and not as nice as they think they are. Although, they see themselves as nice people, anyone outside of toronto (GTA) will disagree.

Garbage in general is so bad in toronto, people throw stuff on the street all the time and there are garbage cans EVERYWHERE. When a garbage can is full, don't just dump the garbage on the street near the garbage can and don't try to shove it in there so the garbage is over flowing!

When I was in Tokyo, public garbage cans were very rare and people just held onto their trash! If it were toronto people, the place would have looked like a garbage dump.

There are definitely nice people in Toronto/GTA...and not so nice. That pretty much goes the same for any other city.

There's also no trash in Tokyo because they don't have take out to fill garbage cans.

they have take out. Including street vendors. They have vending machines that serve food/drinks that also result in garbage but none of it ends up on the street. They are simply more respectful of public spaces than torontonians.

That's nothing compared to what you can take to go here. Get a pizza slice and it comes on a plate in a bag. Its so rare there that they would specifically advertise there was take out - which is what I saw at a sbarros in Tokyo.

Like I said, they are just more respectful of public spaces. When I was there, I had plenty of garbage from take out. Besides that, the concentration of people would intensify the need for more garbage cans even with less waste. Yet... they had FEWER garbage cans than toronto.

What is even worse are those people who do grocery shopping and there are food sampling. Many times I have seen people disposing of the cups, toothpicks, napkins...etc in the food counters even when there is a bin next to them.

Yep, it's quite a dirty city.

I was at a Tim Horton's getting my morning coffee (7AM~) and I witnessed a truck pull up near an alley-way, the driver got out, looked both ways to make sure no one was near him and he threw about a dozen bags allover the ground. It's not uncommon to see pigs like this litter the streets.

Same thing with public transit - people throwing big mac boxes and bags allover the ground and spilling drinks on the seats without cleaning it up.

If we didn't litter a lot of people would be out of jobs. Think of them before you decide to properly dispose of your waste.
