Toronto Police are investigating brazen attacks that have terrorized a Scarborough home leaving a school teacher struggling to defend his young family.
Mike Greer, 37, said he doesn’t sleep much any more.
Instead, he jolts awake when the security lights flick on over his driveway.
Ever since he moved into a Friendship Ave. home in May 2010 with his wife and their two children, aged 3 and 5, they’ve been at odds with a group of teenagers who Greer said are now targeting their home.
Raucous teenagers, he added, congregate on the property of West Rouge Jr. Public School next to his house at all hours of the night.
Last summer, when marijuana smoke blew into his son’s bedroom window, the Toronto District School Board teacher said he asked the teens to move along. But the teens fired back, swearing and refusing to budge.
“We started getting fed up with it,” Greer said. “If we don’t ask them to move away, we’ve lost the peaceful enjoyment of our house.”
That October, when he saw a group of teens breaking into a school bus parked on school property, he called police and the teens were caught.
That’s when things got ugly.
Greer said eggs were thrown at his house soon after, and the following month all four tires on his Subaru were slashed.
He said police told him there was nothing they can do unless the teens are caught in the act.
So, at a cost of $3,000, he installed security lights with sensors and two infrared cameras that feed into his garage.
This spring he met with his local school board trustee, Jerry Chadwick, and a representative from the office of his local councilor, Ron Moeser.
The school board installed a gate at the front driveway of the school to prevent cars from entering the property, and lighting was adjusted to stay on until midnight.
For a few weeks in May, a police community response unit patrolled the area at night and things were quiet, Greer said.
But on the May long weekend, two of Greer’s cars were scratched and tires slashed.
There have been more eggings — one Greer caught on camera — and just last week, a Molotov cocktail was thrown onto his property, extinguishing on the driveway.
When Greer returned home from walking his dog on Monday, a Pontiac G5 rolled up and he said the teens inside yelled threats at him: “We’ll get you. We know where you live.”
Greer said he has run out of options and has resorted to staking out his own home from his car.
“My first concern is my kids and my wife,” he said. “There’s nothing you can do to protect yourself.”
Chadwick said the school board is working to keep Greer and other residents safe from teens using their property.
Lights with sensors will be installed in the next few days on the north side of the school property near Greer’s home, Chadwick said, and they are testing the feasibility of installing cameras.
“Hopefully that will discourage this type of behaviour,” he said. “We from the TDSB will do everything we can to adjust the facilities to restrict their access.”
On Wednesday afternoon, two plainclothes Toronto Police detectives visited Greer’s home where they told him they would be investigating the attacks.
For Greer, all he wants is peace for his family.
“It was supposed to be a really great neighbourhood where we could raise our kids,” Greer said. “How does this end? We don’t know.”

So death threats are not enough to put them in jail? What good are the police and the justice system then?

I feel bad for the teacher, I mean how much more evidence does he need..
And OP, you need to read the news more, worse things happening in other areas. You better start calling them Jane and Finch too while you're at it.

This is what happens when you have a crapload of kids to claim government benefits and don't parent them other than leaving them outside to play with your neighbor's similarly aged kids. The bad apples will outnumber the good apples thanks to peer pressure and lack of mature adults.
There is another part of the GTA that has a reputation for this.
Note to mods: I did not mention any specific race. Statement can apply to any race.

Wow, some battles may have to be lost for the best of it... he should probably pick up and move elsewhere for the safely of his family. I'm kinda the hot headed type and would probably land in jail if any of this happened to me.

Toronto Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy connected to attacks on a Scarborough home where a young family say they have been terrorized by local teens for more than a year.
The teen, whose name cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with threatening property damage. He was arrested Wednesday and was scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning, a release said.
The charged teen is alleged to have approached the home of Mike Greer, 37, and his family in West Rouge on Monday at 8 p.m. in a Pontiac G5 and uttering threats.

Const. Tony Vella said police believe there were more teens in the car and are urging them to come forward.
Vella said information from the victim, the police investigation as well as “community assistance,” led to the arrest.
Greer said he returned home from walking his dog on Monday, when the car rolled up and the teens inside yelled threats at him: “We’ll get you. We know where you live.”
Police are continuing their investigation into brazen attacks on Greer’s home, Vella said.
Meanwhile, Greer said he doesn’t sleep much any more.

Heard about this over the weekend and damn, feel bad for the guy. But it's tough, that's why alot of people I know don't like living on a house that's adjacent to a school. If not for the traffic issues, then for the potential for jerkoff kids.

City of Scarborough no longer exists - the area of Scarborough is part of the City of Toronto since amalgamation in 1998 (which for some reason nobodys gets correct) - so, yes, you should say that.

Google Maps (http://maps.google.ca) you can find it with bit of comparison to the picture in the article + details in article.
Average house for the area.. not sure why anyone would want to live that close to a school. Either way the kids and parents should be punished.

"As much of an advocate for decriminalization as I am, I hardly think that's the issue here. "
It sounds like this teacher called the cops because some students where smoking pot near his house. You know something like 50% of highschool student smoke pot right. But the cops don't do anything for this.
Let see, someone whats you put in jail for something that is harmless and has been done by teenagers for the last 40 years, should we be surprised? The kids are not dumb either they can read that pot is not harmful but alcohol is very harmful. They are sensitive about hypocrisy at this age too.
This teacher wants the kids to go to jail maybe he's paranoid about his own kids, but that's a rather poor attitude for a teacher.
The point is why are these kids hanging around the school at night? Because they have to hide from their parents. You see how the drama is created. Not to mention the high price of $10 a gram the kids are spending, which is lot of money for them. Ya they are mad, wonder why.

Again, I am pretty open about being a pot user myself and I want nothing more than to see full decriminalization but I hardly think that smoking pot is the only reason they're hanging out where they are. I would wager that not one of them knows the history and real issues surrounding prohibition. I think you're making some connections in your post that simply aren't there. It's as problematic as those on the opposite side of the decriminalization issue who might be saying that the pot CAUSED them to go nuts and antagonize this man.

Yes this is not about smoking weed and that should be left out of this thread. The teacher only asked them to move along as it was coming in his kid's bedroom window.
Now when he called the cops when saw the kids breaking into a school bus, how did the kids know it was him that called?? As the article states it got worse after that.
As for the video evidence. I was listening to him on 640 Talk yesterday and he said the single kid he caught on video had his face covered, so that did not help the cops at all
Looks like the police ended up arresting one of the teens.

Now that one of the teens has been arrested I can only see it getting worse for him. Is this area a high gang activity area?
If this was happening to me I might resort to setting up booby traps. Now I know that could cause problems for me if I ever did that, but it might teach the little buggers a lesson their parents are obviously failing to do.

Real talk: ghetto parts of just about anywhere, really. If you don't have a solid plan to parent kids, you shouldn't have them. I'm going to get flamed for this and I'm sure there are a lot of downsides, but I really do believe people should submit an application to have kids. If you don't have a solid parenting plan and/or you're not prepared to commit the time necessary, you shouldn't have kids.

THe problem is that adults aren't allowed to hit kids in Canada. He's a big guy who could probably beat the ***** out of those little dinks with one hand, yet he has to put up with their ***** because it's illegal for him to hit them. In many other country kids never do things like this because they know an adult could just beat them to within an inch of their life and he wouldn't get in trouble.

Based on my own experiences Police don't do much. A neighbour is stalking someone in my household literally as soon as she steps out the door. I go out with her one day and tell a few words to the guy and he runs in and dials 911 and says that I threatened him (outright lie). He is over 6 feet and Im a smaller size. Police shows up at my employer to question me. I reminded them about our long history of reports of vandalism to the house, slashed tires, death threats by mail and phone (call trace did not work), and other harassing behaviour. That's not relevant they said.
Advised my MP and Councillor but the police don't do much. I feel for these people and no I don't live in Scarborough.
