View Full Version : Home Lowes: Bosch dishwasher, $648 ($400 off) - Best dishwasher - HOT

Jul 5th, 2012, 08:40 AM
"Best Recommended Buy" dishwasher per latest Consumers Report tests (clean best, least time to clean one load of dishes, least repair history, etc). Granted, the racks are one inch smaller than other brands of dishwasher, but it can finish cleaning one load of dishes in 95 minutes while other brands like Samsung dishwasher take 180 minutes, i.e., twice the time.
This dishwasher model appears to be made by Bosch specifically for Lowes and other retail stores dont carry this model although they belong to the same Ascenta series. You may try to go to sears to see if they carry this model, as Sears price match and gives 10% of price difference, and there may be free shipping with sears card.

They may be cheaper on sale, but they dont have the following features that the Lowes dishwasher has - adjustable top rack (good feature to accommodate taller glasses or dishes), delicate wash, and flip tines.

The detail test is in the consumers report site. Here is the review by customers in the US Bestbuy, but should note that this bestbuy dishwasher appears to have less features than the Lowes, but they belong to the Boasch Ascenta series that consumers report tests rated as best recommended buy. Note also that a few customers offering less than desirable comments because it has smaller racks or not adjustable rack because it is a cheaper model, but they fail to appreciate that this bosch dishwasher cleans the fastest, clean the best, and has least repair history, ie., those factors that they fail to appreciate immediately.

With respect, that is your personal opinion and if that dishwasher makes u happy, power to you, until you find out that frigidaire dishwasher has just above average (i.e., not the best) in cleaning, below average repair history, average in nose, and takes 135 to 180 minutes to wash a load depending on the models. Many people buy appliances based on look, gimmicks, etc. with little regard to usefulness, reliability, etc.

make sure you read about the quirks of Bosch dishwashers before you buy. I purchased a 800+ series Bosch dishwasher, got it on sale for $1100 (msrp is like 1800). While it does save energy and water it has several quirks:
1) No garbarator, so you have to constantly clean out the manual food trap, if you don't, the dishwasher will smell, and make your dishes smell
2) Ours for whatever reason, doesn't seem to clean stainless steel cutlery or SS pots/pans, we often have to run them 2+ loads, even on scrub cycle or wash by hand
3) no heater, this is why it saves energy, but then I have to manually dry a lot of my cups/dishes
Out of all my appliances that I purchased (prob close to $15k), I hate the Bosch dishwasher. And unlike the other appliances, didn't do my research since there were so many positive reviews already... shame on me.

1. I have used my bosch dishwasher for about 4 weeks now, but have yet to find food debris in the filter. Maybe because I scraped the left over food off the dishes before I put the dishes into the dishwasher.
2. My bosch ascenta dishwasher has no problem to clean out stick-on cheese and pasta sauce on stainless steel spoons or scoops or pots.
3. The manual and people who have bought it say that u need to use jetdry to help dry the dishes, but I generally dont bother to add jetdry as my dishes and utensils are generally dry enough, when the bosch dishwasher raised its water temperature, plus the stainless steel interior, to do the condensation drying. Other dishwashers with a heating element may warp plastic dishes and utensils.
Granted, not all customers love the bosch dishwashers, but over time, you find more satisfied customers than other dishwashers. At least, I am happy with it, as my prior dishwasher need pre-rinsing, but not anymore.

Can anyone comment on the performance of this dishwasher vs the Bosch dishwasher that was on at the Bay a few weeks ago for $499 (also in the Ascenta series)?
I know this has 2 more cycles, a complete stainless steel interior (including tub base), and the configurable cutlery tray. They are both rated 50dba. I picked up the $499 dishwasher a few days ago (it was on back order), but am thinking of giving that one to my parents and picking this one up instead. The Sanitize cycle, the tub base finish and the configurable cutlery tray seem to be worth the extra $80.

Both dishwashers should wash BEST per the consumers report dishwasher tests, as both belong to the bosch dishwasher ascenta series. The Lowes bossch dishwasher is mentioned in the consumers report as the "best recommended buy" because it considers this dishwasher the same or similar as the other acenta dishwasher tested. In fact, consumers report tested dishwashers of many brands (frigidare, samsung, whirlpool etc), including many bosch dishwashers, and indicated that all bosch dishwashers wash best, while otehr brand dishwashers wash from below average to best, but they all trail behind bosch dishwasher in wash time (whicn can go to 3 hrs per wash load), in repair history (except Miele and Whirlpool Gold which equual to bosch).
This lowes dishwasher has the following features that the bay bosch dishwasher on sale of $499 some weeks ago doesnt have - adjustable top rack to accomodate taller glases or dishes, adjustible tine, delicate wash.
I suggest that u go to the bosch website, and download its ascenta dishwsaher manual, which covers 4 models including the lowes and bay ones.

1) No garbarator, so you have to constantly clean out the manual food trap, if you don't, the dishwasher will smell, and make your dishes smell
European dishwashers usually do not have a garbarator. I have a Miele and NEVER had it smell funny. The Miele seems to flush the food complete each time...
3) no heater, this is why it saves energy, but then I have to manually dry a lot of my cups/dishes
Miele (not sure about Bosch) has a ClearAir dry system - it uses the remaining heat to air/condense dry the cutlery. Works quite well.

Of course certain units have a heating element, but I never really found it THAT beneficial.

god that has to be the ugliest dishwasher ever based on the pic Lowe's used :)
I don't think you'll have any luck PMng folks. While it is almost the same model when the base number is the same, Lowe's has their own suffix variation. Even consumerreports generalized the review of the Lowe's model and referred readers to the Bosch Ascenta SHX3AR7[5]UC for details.
We have a samsung on order but I've been reading horrible things and was consider changing over to a Bosch before delivery. Still undecided since the Ascenta's are shorter than a typical under counter and drinks rinse aid. dunno why buying dishwashers has to be such a headache, seems like such a crapshoot.

As said, the guts of the bosch ascenta are are the same, with stainless steel interior except the plastic bottom, and the higher price bosch ascenta dishwasher has more features like adjustable top rack, adjustable tine, more wash cycles like delicate wash.
Before buying a dishwasher, u need to decide what features are the most importnat to you - clean best? least wash time? least repair history? big racks? heating element? noise?
At the beginning of looking for a dishwasher, my spouse wanted me to buy the samsung dishwasher - bigger racks - until I found out that the dishwasher takes 3 hrs to finish washing, ie twice the time of a bosch dishwasher. PLUS, samsung dishwashers are more prone to repairs. Peopled dont appreciate the bosch features until the dishwasher breaks down, or when you wash a couple of loads of dishes or glasses before a party and it takes 3 hrs each to wash.

I've had my Bosch dishwasher now since December (so about 7 months). It gets run at least daily (we do ALL of our dishes, including pots and pans) and the performance has been very good. Prior to this we had a Whirlpool gold dishwasher. The actual cleaning in this dishwasher is IMO on par with what the Whirlpool did, as is the noise.
I'm generally pleased with this dishwasher outside of the fact it's a decent amount smaller than the Whirlpool was. I first reported that I couldn't fit a few of my dishes in the Bosch, but as it turns out, the upper rack was adjustable (just in a different way than I was expecting!), so its clearance isn't as bad as what I first thought. Overall for the price I paid for it (got it from Sears by PMing Canadian Appliance), I'm generally happy although I think I'd have gone with the Kitchenaide washer over the Bosch on size alone. (I bought the Bosch unseen just going from reviews).

Not sure why heater is so important ... (or have you tried this? Avoiding the drying cycle saves electricity.)
If one opens the dishwasher door when it is finished the wash cycle (ie. don't select dry cycle), by the process of evaporation the dishes become dry.
After the wash, the dishes are HOTish - same temp as the hot water. By openning the dishwasher, pullingout all the racks, flipping over the bowls/cups that hold some water on their bottom lip, everything becomes dry - naturally. (This takes 1 minute to open DW, pull out racks and flip bowls/cups. I also like to take out pot/pans and wipe dry at this point. When pans/pots are HOTish, it is so easy to wipe and let evaporation do its thing.)
We do need to wipe the plastic containers as plastic doesn't retain hold heat well.

Using a heater warps plastic dishes and utensils, and also uses more electricity and that may explain why non bosch dishwashers take more time to wash/dry the dishes. The bosch dishwashers, like all european dishwashers, dont have an heating element. I dont have problem with my new bosch dishwasher for drying, and i dont use jetdry to help drying although it is recommended. All my dishes and pots are hot and dry when the cycle finish, except the top troughs of cups where water still stands, and it helps if u put the cups at an angle.

To each their own. There are quite a few people that love their Bosch dishwashers, which is one of the reasons I bought mine. But alas, I do not like mine. My old $500 GE dishwasher cleaned all my dishes, and dried them as well. No warping. I will gladly use more water/electricity to get clean dishes than dirty dishes that I have to run twice (Bosch cycles are super long so twice the cycle is like 4+ hrs).
I have the following model just in case: SHV58E13UC
I have also enabled an even hotter water temp thru the settings and I use a liberal amount of jetdry. I even have softened water to no avail...

You might have bought a lemon. I bought a camry once, and its engine and transmission failed after the warranty.
Why cant be denied are (a) there are more satisfied customers of bosch dishwashers than other dishwasher brands, and (b) consumers report organization did an extensive objective of dishwashers and concluded that all bosch dishwasher cleaned the best with the least repair history and least wash time. I am impressed with my new bosch dishwasher when it cleaned out the stuck-on cheese and pasta sauce on dishes, and day old, hardened, stuck-on rice on rice cooker which I would have problem to clean it myself by hand.
