there has been a blackout in toronto. Traffic was outrageous. Everyone did not know how to drive. Does anyone know what happened and when the power might come back? Anyone else without power?

Power is out for about 6,500 Toronto customers on Thursday evening. (Ivy Cuervo/CBC)

A power outage is affecting thousands of customers in the eastern part of Toronto's downtown tonight.

Toronto Hydro is reporting a major outage in an area bounded by Carlton Street to the north, Queens Quay to the south, York Street to the west and Bayview Avenue to the east.

Toronto Hydro spokeswoman Jennifer Link says about 6,500 customers are affected by the outage, which occurred at about 8:15 p.m. ET.

St. Michael's Hospital is among the affected buildings. Toronto police say the hospital is running on emergency generators and is not moving any patients.

There is no word yet on when power may be restored.

Toronto fire officials told the CBC's Ivy Cuervo at the scene that a piece of equipment overheated in an electrical substation at George and Adelaide streets.

Fire crews were waiting for the smoke to clear before Toronto Hydro can assess the damage and determine how long it might take to repair it.

The outage comes during a string of hot weather, though temperatures were expected to drop to 22 C overnight. Heat and humidity are forecast to be extremely high on Friday, with the humidex approaching 50.

Link recommended that people keep their doors and windows closed to keep any air conditioning in, and to keep the fridge door shut so that food does not spoil

I was dropping something off at a friends condo at a younge and colleges condo and then proceeded to head on Carlton down to parliament. As soon as you hit Jarvis that's when all the lights go off. Most drivers were good but there were some that completely forgot the rules of the road. Most people treated intersections as 4 way stops but some idiots just kept going as if they either didn't see the non working signal lights or just plain felt like they should go first. Almost got hit by a speeding taxi as it was my turn to make a left but then what else is new when it comes to downtown Toronto taxi drivers...

What is worse? A blackout, a brownout, or a whiteout?

Whiteouts are the best.

I don't even know why electricity consumption would be so high last night. Last night wasn't particularly hot, especially when you compare it to today. People need to ease off on the ACs and open a window in the evening.

Blackouts are getting scary I remember a few years ago there was a blackout for 2 days or so!

I am converting everything into low or non-energy dependent now like bicycling :D

i was in Nepal last year and they had 'load shedding' for up to 8-16 hours per day. Sometimes i'd wake up in the middle of the night because suddenly the fan and lights just turned on! The hotels also have these massive generators and most are cheap only truck diesel, so you will hear nothing but generator until 11:00-12:00 at night in some places. The place i stayed for a while also had no water and truck had to come every day and fill the tank, again they used a diesel pump on the back of the truck for 1/2 hour. Never stay at that place again.

Anyways I tend to use bicycles and candles (during winter) more now and whatever other things I can think of to save energy :D

So they didn't have any traffic cops?

It's rare that they'll get there soon enough to help. Back a few weeks before the G20 happened there were some traffic lights down on University, and I remember seeing random businessmen out in the intersections directing traffic because there were no cops around. It worked pretty well, suprisingly.

Whats a brownout? If it involves burritos, i dont wanna know.

Blackouts teach people to stop relying on stupid gadgets and more on themselves. Occasional blackout's cool.

Whiteouts are the best:

The burrito form is one type of brownout, but the other is when your voltage sags low enough that equipment starts to malfunction. You don't lose power, but stuff stops working properly or is overly stressed.

Burrito and electrical form both result in $hit malfunctioning.

In Canada, brownouts are rare, as it is a reduction of available power. Most major appliances stop working (fridge etc.), lights dim but don't go out. Smaller appliances like modems and routers may work.

Something similar happened while we were in Laos last fall.

We wanted to use the internet cafe, but the power went out midday and the locals said it was normal.

It happened once that I can remember ... it was night (around 10:30pm, early September), and I was in a 2 story building. About 2/3 of the City of London (ONT) was in a 'brown out' ... apparently, a wire had been partially severed somewhere - some power was getting through but Ontario Hydro (at the time) and London's PUC had to go in and fix it. Took them 3-4 hours.
