So I will be moving to Ottawa from Toronto towards the end of July. I am looking for a one way truck rental and was wondering if any of you guys had any experience or advice on the matter. The way it is looking so far:
Budget: $750 "including everything" according to the person I called. He wasn't willing to go into more detail so I assume that will cover at least one day and enough kilometres to get me there.
Discount: $850+ website quote.
Uhual: Cheapest at $400 including insurance. Bad reviews all over.
Penske and Ryder: No one way truck rentals...
Are there other options? Have you done a similar move? Any kind of input will be much appreciated. Thank you all.

I find that the Budget trucks are better maintained/newer than UHaul. Often the UHaul trucks are plated with Arizona plates because of the low safety requirements. It's really going to come down to what you want to pay for and what you feel comfortable driving.
It's not as if the UHaul falls apart the instant you drive off the lot or they wouldn't be in business. But I would suspect you are taking a higher risk for it breaking down than with Budget.

Depends, UHaul has smartened up a bit lately. I guess all those negative press coverage finally got to them, the UHaul trucks I see on the road are mostly newer models and not rolling rust buckets anymore.

Thanks a lot guys. It is not only the condition of the trucks that I am worried about when it comes to uhaul. I read stories online of people whose reservation was messed up and had to postpone the move, change the location of pickup or drop off, or get a bigger/smaller truck than what they reserved.

U-hauls ALL have Arizona plates because that's where the company (and its vehicles) are based. Nothing to do with safety requirements.

Every move me or my parents have done has always been with a Uhaul truck. This includes TWICE from Quebec to Halifax, and twice in/around the Halifax area. Even with the older model trucks, I never once felt like I was ever put into a dangerous situation because of the vehicle. Never once have I had a problem with reservations. Always made my reservation a few days (or weeks) before the date I wanted, whether it be online, or actually going in, and it was always honored with what I had reserved. Some of the negative reviews I've read seem a little overly-exaggerated. It's a rental truck, not a freakin' limousine.

IMO UHaul is for the same class of suckers who cash their cheques at those payday loan places.
Their rental locations are at whatever assorted and sundry businesses they can manage to sign up to act as agents. They only distribute the minimum required number of units to those locations to meet that day's bookings, so there are usually no vehicles in reserve nearby if the truck they had planned to give you turns out to have a mechanical problem or has not been properly serviced and cleaned. I'd stick with Budget or Avis (yes, many corporately-run Avis locations have trucks.)
If you want another comparison, National also used to rent vans and cube vans one-way, but I'm not sure if that's still the case since they got hoovered-up by Enterprise. In any case you have to be extremely careful with them because their insurance (CDW) has incredibly high deductibles.
