my max speed is about 500kbs, i see the basic dsl is 6000mps, which is 750kbs, so that is 500/750 = 66%. i called them about this and they said everything is ok on thier end, and that i should check the wiring in my house??? is that right? that doesn't seem right at all...

i am using a tplink modem and a linksyswrt54g router if it helps.

Seems fine. DSL speeds depend on your distance from the CO for speed, so maybe you are simply far?

This is good speed for acanac...many have way worse.

You are dividing 6000 by 8 (bits to bytes), and that's 750. But TCP/IP uses more than 8 bits to transfer a single byte because of the protocol overhead, so in AVERAGE you can say that it takes 10 bits to transfer a single byte. And that gives you about 600 KBps (kilo-Bytes per second) as a theoretical maximum (rarely reached).

I say your download throughput is a bit lower than I would expect for a 6 Mbps connection. Go to speedtest.net and run a test against the closest server you can find. They can't argue those results.

Also confirm with them the actual connection speed of your modem (or do this yourself if you know how to). Mine was connected at 5 Mbps when I was paying for a 6 Mbps connection (although a different provider).

Ya best bet is to check your connection speed in the modem, if its off than you will have to do a few troubleshooting things with acanac and then they will get bell to fix it.

If its showing the correct speed its very likely your just too far away to reach full speeds, I am with acanac and I get around 550 max.

Don't mix up your bits and bytes! For telecommunications purposes, you should always work in bits per second.

I'm seeing a few issues here.

The simple one first: are you running the test over wifi? Wifi will diminish your speed. Try plugging the computer directly into the modem and see if the throughput changes at all.

Second: you numbers and calculations are confusing. 1 Mb (megabit) is equal to 1000 Kb (kilobits). You stated that the basic DSL is 6000mps? I'm assuming you meant 6000Kbps or 6Mbps. Make sure you get the right numbers and the right units before doing any calculations like this.

One hates to be pedantic but .... the correct notation is kbps (lower case k) and Mbps (upper case M). So 6000kbps = 6Mbps.
