Hi everyone,
I am planning to finance 2012 COROLLA CE 4A with a small downpayment. http://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/build-price/cor#models-options
I went to a couple of showrooms to look around in GVA. I am confident that I want this model. I was just wondering about the pricing. This is my first car shopping experience here, one of the guys told me that the best he can do is get me a discount of $400 off the Price since they don't have much margins on Corollas. Although, I dont know whether that is reasonable or I can push for more.
Share perspectives and experiences please. Should I keep looking for a better deal?
Regards,

If you're ready to buy, check out the carcostcanada report.
The salesman is lying through his teeth. With Hyundai and Kia coming on strong and a Jetta at the same price, they'd be lucky to ever sell a base model Corolla with a manual transmission.
Edit: NM, you're looking at one with a automatic transmission

So since its an automatic, do you think its a good deal then?

I'm not sure.
I personally won't accept a nominal $400 off, but then again, I wouldn't finance a $15k car either - especially when there's a $2k cash purchase incentive. I mean, that's only $18k OTR without any negotiating.
Keep in mind that a base model Corolla was going for ~$20k + tax like, 2 years ago.

So, what's your point? This is an appliance level vehicle. There's no need for a 1000hp capable 8-speed F1 transmission. I'm sure Toyota can make that available as an option for $100,000.

Regards,
Based on Costcoauto.com's listed prices, the US margin is $960. So, even if Canadian dealers make 50% more, that's a margin of $1500 less the $400 discount means a total margin of $1100. That's a relatively average margin on a car. No one is going to get rich making only $1000/vehicle sold.
According to the low-rate vs incentive calculator, 0.9% for 72 months or $2000 cash back, the breakeven interest rate is about 4.35%.

I don't live in Vancouver, but the general impression I got here is Vancouver Toyota dealers run a price fixing cartel.

So.. ? :|
When the base price drops by 25%, demand is going to jump. When demand jumps, dealers are less likely to negotiate - especially on a base model economy car.
