I'm new here. If this question has already been asked and answered before please direct me to it.
I plan to get a 3rd car for my family to share between me, my wife and our two kids who just got their licenses couple years ago. My insurance company told me that each person could only register as the primary driver for one car. As such, since my wife and I are already primary drivers for the 2 cars that we currently have, one of my kids must register as the primary driver for the 3r car. This would result in a very high insurance premium for the young driver.
My question is why I can't register myself to be the primary for more than one car, and add other drivers in the family as occasional drivers ? In fact, my kids are really occasional drivers.
Can I legally register the primary driver (and add other drivers in the family as secondary drivers) for the 3rd car with a different auto insurance company ?
Thanks

Basically the insurance company looks at it like this..
If you have a car, and your wife has a car why would you be sharing the 3rd car? The kids will be sharing it, therefore out of the two of them the higher risk driver will be the one who's rates the 3rd car is based on.
It sucks, and it's the reason many don't get a third car, or Sports car for summer use while the kids are still at home. A friend (divorced) at work was looking at getting an F150 for all the outdoors stuff he does what his focus can't handle, until he called insurance and was informed the rates for the truck will be based on his son and that will be $3500+ a year for insurance.
My son turns 16 tomorrow, if he goes and get's his motorcycle license my bike insurance will skyrocket because my bikes rates will no longer be based on me (41), but on a 16 year old male, the highest risk group.

insurance companies require that if you have 3 vehicles, a driver must be assigned to each one of those vehicles. Since you will have 3, you & your wife will be on 2 of them as principle ops and one of the kids, most likely the highest rated one will be listed on the 3rd. Thats just how it works. You cannot be primary on 2 when you have 3 and 4 drivers. Going to another insurance company ... this new company will clearly see the 2 other vehicles and drivers showing on an auto plus report AND when you fill in a new application it clearly asks...how many lic'd operators in the household, AND how many vehicles are in the household...failing to answer honestly is called misrepresentation and if you get found out, you'll be cancelled for misrepresentation...not a good thing to have on your insurance record.

Yes, I think the OP need to sign a waiver stating "my son/daughter will not touch my 3rd car or motorcycle period, if they were to damage property the company is therefore not responsible to pay any damages". That only works if husband and wife has 2 car and a motorcycle, and have no intend by kids to do anything with them. It's clearly not the case in the OP's original questions. He intended to have a 3rd car to insure so they can all share the cars together.
1) The only way out will be to have the OP get a beater car and insure it based on the son/daughter. beater cars are cheaper to insure and will help kids driving history with the insurance companies.
2) The OP tell the son/daughter to get a part time job in order to finance the insurance / car partially. no money = no play that's always been the saying from the beginning of time.

if you exclude by end't 28a, it will exclude from all vehicles
hard to find a company that will exclude from only 1

If the rules bother you that much please contact your MPP and tell them that the auto insurance industry is killing economic growth in Ontario with insane rules and pricing like this. If enough of us do it maybe some fairness will return to rates in Ontario for families/drivers with good driving records.
There is a new thread on here every couple of days about something to do with the highly inflated cost of car insurance in Ontario... yet nothing is ever said in the media about it. It is just as easily to email your MPP as it is to post on here about it.

Unfortunately the rule about 3 cars, 3 primary drivers is a universal North American rule, not just in Ontario.
