Hey guys, I'm a 18 year old turning 19 and need some information about insurance as my parents have no idea what they are saying. I have my g1 but never thought about getting my g2 till this summer because I knew I couldn't drive without insurance.
So first question, why do we need insurance for the automobile and person driving?
Is it illegal to drive without insurance for the person driving even though the vehicle has insurance?
Is possible to get insurance under my parents to get cheaper insurance for me?
What is the best thing for me to do?
I have been doing a lot of research but I'm really confused and would really love some help. Also correct me if I'm wrong on anything.
Thanks :).

Simplified, In an accident, lets say Person A's car hits Person B's car. Person A is at fault, so they have to pay for repairs, towing, injuries, car write-offs, etc. If Insurance did not exist, Person A would need to pay (out of pocket) for Person B's car repairs, transportation, injuries, medicine, etc. and that monetary amount may be up to a few million dollars. So insurance is there to protect both parties, regardless of fault, and that's why you pay for this 'protection'.
Of course, there is a lot more technical, detailed and legal mumbo jumbo, but that's a whole can of worms. And I don't know it ;)
Is it illegal to drive without insurance for the person driving even though the vehicle has insurance?
Yes if you live within the household. So if you live with your parents, and your parents have insurance without your name on it, then yes it is. It's been a while in regards to the G1, I think there is a different set of rules in regards to insurance when you only have a G1. However, if its, say your friends car, then you can drive it, but if anything happens, it'll effect their policy.
Is possible to get insurance under my parents to get cheaper insurance for me?
Yes, but it'll still be pricey.
What is the best thing for me to do?
Take public transit. Or you can drive to work to pay & insure for that very car.

I'm aware of the basic ghist of insurance. Sadly, the technical side is what I need and I know its a lot! Bit thank you for the other information.

Well, if you live with your parents, your parents should have told their insurance about your G1 -> there's often no charge to add you as a secondary driver with a G1.
If you live with your parents, you have to be either (1) under your parents' insurance, (2) have your own insurance or (3) sign an exclusion form. If you're not on the insurance and you live at home and you drive, your parents' insurance could get cancelled.
It'll be significantly cheaper if you're considered a secondary driver under your parents' plan, assuming your parents' records are clean.

If you`re going to be driving a vehicle that is registered at the house you live in (ie your parents car) then you must be registered on the insurance for that vehicle as well. Otherwise, your parents would need to sign a document stating that you will never drive that car.
You can; however, drive friends cars without needing to be on the insurance for that vehicle. As long as you don`t live at the same address where the car is registered, you can drive it without being on the insurance.
Yes, you can be on your parents insurance as an occasional driver. There are a few exceptions though. If there`s 3 cars in the household, then you and both your parents will all need to be the primary driver on a vehicle. You can`t be on their insurance as an occasional driver in this case, since the insurance company isn`t stupid and they know if there`s 3 cars in the household, you`ll be driving one of them all the time. If there`s 2 cars though, and both your parents are licensed drivers, then they will each be the primary on one vehicle and you can be the occasional on one or both.

I do have three vehicles but have older siblings that drive and the third vehicle is exclusively my brothers. But thank you all!
How much do you think it would cost for me to get insurance. I know there are going to be different rates, but an estimate would do.
Sorry for all the silly questions!

There`s no way for us to give you even a rough estimate without knowing your personal information and the information of the vehicles.
Don`t be surprised if you have to pay over $300 a month as a primary driver, and over $150 per month as an occasional driver.

You don't have a choice as to what car or rating they put you on.
The ins company will automatically put you as a 2nd or 3rd driver on the highest rated car. (That is, unless your parents waive the insurance companies right to payout a claim if youre driving a higher rated vehicle by signing their rights away)
This means that if you have an '12 Mercedes, you're going to pay the price of the '12 mercedes lol.
My son is getting his G2 soon. He'll probably be charged secondary premiums as a driver on my wife's 08 Hyundai Tiburon. Its rated higher than my '98 Accord.
But in all fairness, he's going to be driving the Tiburon more often anyways. The ins company knows that. When theres a like new car thats stylish and attractive, they know that the kid will be driving it more than some (almost) 15yr old car.

Thanks for all your help. $150 doesn't seem all that bad actually. I have a 2002 Honda civic, 2004 Honda Odyssey, and a 2009 (I believe) accord.
My parents seem to make it seem really really expensive, like in the 700 range. My dad has been driving for more than 40 years but in Canada not so much, like 16 years with a relatively clean record. My mother has 2 accidents on her belt. And my brother none.

If you'd like a quick quote as a primary driver, fill in the forms at Kanetix.ca . I still do it every once in a while to see how much some cars will cost to insure (exotics, for example haha).
