Evening folks!
I have a HP DV6648SE laptop that I had purchased for university back in late 2006. However I am no longer using that laptop any more and have decided to part away with it. I am trying to decide if I should sell the laptop for dirt cheap at $100 being the max or just give it away for free?
I've also taken away the HDD and using it as an external drive for my Xbox. Plus 1 stick of RAM is hot and have not replaced it, hence only is 1GB. I was also thinking its not worth buying a cheap HDD or another stick of RAM just to give it away for free or sell it.

Any input would be appreciated.

If you give it away for free, who were you planning on giving it to?
Are they a knowledgeable computer person (and if so why would they want it) or are they a newbie for whom it may be more trouble to them than it's worth?

Freecycle. Post an ad to your local community's Freecycle page and you can decide who you want to give it to. This way you can feel good knowing you gave it to someone who may need it without worrying about them coming back at you because it doesn't work. (Of course, be honest about the condition and any concerns you may have about it).
Wow, two posts today about Freecycle. Really, it's just a great community.

Ideally you could get an HDD so that to make it fully functional. Then it would become much more useful to the person who gets it, and will make it more likely that it will be actually used. You might even ask a higher price and still get more replies.
The only concern I would have is that IIRC this laptop family is vulnerable to GPU chip getting loose. So if you decide to sell it, you should make sure that the hardware is all good. And that would be difficult to do without an HDD.

Sell it, or give it to me. :)

Well if I do give it free it will be for someone who deserves it. Maybe a family gives it to their child in elementary school or something. The laptop works fine, well except the battery (after a full charge, it diminishes to dead after 20 minutes of heavy use). Didn't bother spending too much on changing the battery and it happened after the extended warranty period. Hence the charger has to be present when the laptop is being used.
The thing is if I buy a HDD, I am looking at roughly $60 to buy one, unless I find a dirt cheap one through the BST. Sadly the staples ones are all OOS for the clearance ones I've been seeing in Hot Deals. How can I verify the GPU chip being loose or not with the presence of the HDD?
Haha @ Fantaz, lol. What would you be using the laptop for?
Honestly, even if I do sell it, I don't know whom will want to buy a very old laptop without a HDD and a properly functioning battery. I guess I can just give it free to someone and let them decide what they want to do with it, etc.

Whatever happened to caveat emptor, especially when people buy off the web?

Sell it for dirt cheap. Something like $20 just to put a price tag on it. I find it incredibly hard to give things away these days, people always assume there's something seriously wrong with it if you're giving it away.

Well if I do give it free it will be for someone who deserves it. Maybe a family gives it to their child in elementary school or something. The problem here is that without the HDD it would be useless to the child (and most of other people). Only someone with sufficient technical knowledge would be interested.

Poor battery life usually reduces a laptop's value significantly.

Install OS and drivers. Verify that it works OK under normal usage. Run some stress tests on CPU and GPU.
Whatever happened to caveat emptor, especially when people buy off the web?It would only be applicable if there is a "sold as is" note.

I find it incredibly hard to give things away these days, people always assume there's something seriously wrong with it if you're giving it away.I remember a story when someone was renovating an office and put some of the previous furniture outside for grabs (still in good condition). However, nobody was taking it. Not even after putting up a "free" sign. But after changing it to "for sale" with some symbolic price, it was gone the next day.

Be nice, donate it to someone that needs it.
Make sure you zero your hard drive before giving it away... Use a software like DBAN :D

OP drives a B8 A4 and thinks that selling for $100 is worth the trouble? Donate it.

You can give it to a friend or someone who need a laptop and can't afford to buy a new one.

Send it to recycle. Hard drives as no longer as cheap as they used to be. A six year old laptop is not worth the cost of investing in a new hard drive,IMHO.

Well pretty much even if I give it free, no one would want to spend money on a hard drive anyways. Even a person who can't afford a laptop, will find it hard to buy a hard drive. You're right. Off to the recycle who goes.

Sell it, it will benefit you rather than giving it. I am not being selfish just being practical.
