I'm thinking of using my Note with VOIP only. Is it possible to subscribe just data only?

VOIP: No.

Speakout UMB works as fulfilling data plan only, although it's not full data plus VOIP doesn't work.

Any of the prepaid plans that charge you at a per minute rate allow you to get data add ons. Just don't use any minutes and you will not be charged for it. However for large amounts of data this more expensive than on postpaid.

I am also wondering about the tablet data flex option, but it seems to be a lot of trick of using it on phones, any one got good summarized information on it?

It says that you can just buy a SIM and activate on the Tablet Flex (SIM only) plan

I think the problem people have is with the iPad data plans (as the other tablet plans didn't exist yet). There are some activation tricks needed and Rogers checks whether you are really using a iPad or not.

I played around with VOIP on both Bell/Rogers 3G. It's not there yet, maybe better on LTE as there's too much latency. I found it worked not too badly in lightly loaded areas when you weren't in motion. It doesnt work well in a heavily loaded area like a busy shopping mall or while in motion in a a car

VOIP can be a major hit on battery life too (just waiting for calls on standby!) depending on how you set it up

I sugguest you try voip for a month first before you commit to it.

The answer is 2 x YES.
You just need to subscribe to a monthly, tablet-only (flex) plan (not the ipad plan), and make sure you have the right sim (or micro sim). Install a VoIP app, use the proper settings, and you're good to go.

Does that mean that I can activate Samsung Glaxy Tab and just put it on the Note?

You don't need to activate it on any other device. Just insert the sim in the Note.
I assume your Note is either unlocked or the device and the sim were bought from the same carrier.

No, just phone in and say you have a galaxy tab and you want to activate a tablet plan. I believe tablet plans have to be called in vs. IPad plans which can be activated on device.

They might ask for imei, just say that its at home and you don't have it in front of you.

Bell's tablet plan is $5-$35 (5GB), requires no contract, and has no activation fee. Many happy clients with this plan.

Even better to do it in store. Without the device. Just ask for the tablet plan you want. If they ask about the device, tell them you don't have it. They will give you the micro sim + will activate the service. Buy a micro sim to sim adapter to use it on devices which require a regular sim.
If you don't like it, you may cancel at any time w/o penalties.

Have to agree with the others. Just say you have a generic Chinese tablet or something. With Telus you have to activate over the phone or in store. When I called in, the CSR didn't even know about the "Flex Data Plan for Tablets". Make sure they give you that one.

AND this is important - make sure that after it is activated, that your APN is set to "isp.telus.com" and NOT "sp.telus.com". Otherwise you will be charged for pay-as-you -go data at $3.00 / MB. The phone I put mine sim card into must have automatically picked the wrong APN - I got charged hefty rates for the first few days and had to call to get them reversed....

I am still testing whether using Dell Voice, Vonage app, TextPlus, etc. on a data-only plan is an completely acceptable replacement for a "real" phone plan with a data add-on.
Not convinced yet.

The system doesn't even care what IMEI we use when we activate for our clients.

You may use Freephoneline as your home number and as mobile VoIP via Fring or another app.

I'm just waiting for Google Voice (with Canadian #'s) or one app that does both free VOIP and Text till I attempt an only data approach. Not interested in telling people 2 different #'s in order to call and/or text me.

Thanks IRC.

I'm still trying to figure out the cheapest option before I break my contract with Rogers. It's about $60/month for phone number with caller id and voice mail. I might try the monthly plan with Koodo or virgin first.

You may use kik instead of sms.

I think Koodo and Virgin have $35-40, unlimited city calling, with ci and vm. Data plan is $5 and up. I think I also get 10% discount for using my phone. That's a lot better than the $60 for Rogers.
