So I just sold my biggest item on eBay yet at a staggering (at least for me) 90$. Shipping is 37$ as paid by the buyer. I knew all about Paypal holding funds for new sellers, so I wasn't too concerned since I read that if you print a shipping label off of Paypal to ship the item, they release sufficient funds to cover the shipping. Great. Buyer paid for item 20 minutes ago, about to print off label, and no dice; wants to charge my credit card.
Googling leads me to this nice bit of information hidden deep within eBay: "Funds from your buyer won't be made available in advance to cover shipping costs for items sent through UPS or Canada Post". Splendid! So now I don't have money to send the item and will have to dip into money for bills.
Great job, Paypal. You're a real life saver.

yup, Paypal is a buyer protected service. It's made itself into that and I know a lot of users are quite unhappy with their service.
But the problem is, is there another option?

Doing local deals would be the other option!

There are plenty of PayPal horror stories for sellers.
They take your money as they please. I never leave anything in there if unnecessary.

obviously you have to ship the product with your own money

Can google checkout be used for these types of transactions? Or only for 'stores'.
PayPal really needs some competition, that's the main problem.

What a silly way of doing things. If the person pays for shipping, surely I would use that money to ship.

You have to become a trusted seller w/premier or business acct. That's the problem.

You get more suggestions, if you think it is right to ship the product with your own money then you do this.

What? I said in the original post that the buyer did send money via Paypal, but Paypal is holding onto it for several weeks. I can't just wait for it to clear or else negative feedback will be rained upon me.

haha, Charging 37 dollars for an 90 dollar item... either you are using the wrong shipping company, or you are doing some serious profit taking.

There really is not real difference between the money for the item and the money for the shipping. You paid for the product out of your pocket, and you will get the money once the deal is complete. Shipping is just part of the deal, and you will receive the money for that in the same manner.
If paypal doesn't trust you enough to give you the money for the product upfront, why would they trust you with the money for the shipping?

pay with your own money, send it, keep proof, wait for paypal to release funds accordingly, done. paypal protects whoever is most vulnerable, aka people sending their money to someone else.

yea its unfortunate but that is the cost of doing business on ebay. so usually i just insure the item greater than the value of shipping so even if you postman "loses" the item or the buyer "claims he did not receive it, i can at least break even.

I'm surprised another large company hasn't tried to get into the business of online currency. PayPal fees always seemed to be abnormally high when I looked into using it and it seems like too much of a hassle. I can't believe that they haven't come up with PayPal cards that you can buy locally at Shoppers, etc something equivalent to Vanilla MasterCards to allow you to shop online with their currency without having to jump through all of their hoops.

That sounds a lot like a credit card. Pretty hard to crack into that market. Every merchant, online or offline, who accepts credit cards has to pay pretty significant fees to do so. Paypal fees certainly are not cheap, but increased costs relative to the amount of money being exchanged is to be expected in an environment with more small time merchants and a higher risk of fraud.

I feel your pain OP.
That's why I no longer accept Paypal if I do sell anything on Ebay.
Bank EMT or Interac e-Transfer only. Or bank money order if the buyer does not want to use the two.
Does it limit the selling potential? Yes.
Does it keep scammers away? I find it does.

I agree, These methods are pretty much scam proof because they're using their real banking information and so no scamming can be involved In that..
It'll take longer to sell stuff but in the end you won't need to feel paranoid of being scammed..

On the flip side, it allows almost unlimited abuse by the seller. Just as bad as paying with Western Union. Buyers should avoid sellers who demand they use EMT at all times.

This is the problem. PayPal protects the buyer mostly. Me as a buyer I ALWAYS prefer PayPal, at the very least through CC. Something to fall back on. With EMT or interac there is nothing for the buyer to fall back on. We just have to hope the seller ships it and it gets here ok.
PayPal can distinguish between gift money and purchases. Afaik EMT doesn't, and doesn't have a resolution centre.
