Hi
I'm planning on buying my first car on my own. (I've had 2 cars previously but under my dad's insurance name) I was thinking of a used Genesis from 2008-2011.
Any comments, advice, pros, cons, complaints etc?
How do you think the insurance will be? (26 male, Brampton, i've had one speeding ticket under my dad's insurance)
How is the fuel economy?
I can only drive automatic so it would have to be that.
Thanks for any help!

Insurance: Kanetix.ca for rough estimate if you're on your own insurance policy. If not, ask your parents if you're under theirs.
Fuel economy: http://www.fuelly.com/car/hyundai/genesis/2011 http://www.fuelly.com/car/hyundai/genesis/2010

if you want a fun RWD car, get the genesis coupe or BRZ/FRS.
If you want a family oriented midsized sedan turned coupe, look at the accord.
I recon insurance will be cheaper on the accord though. The current gen accords are very nice! but FWD on a coupe is not very sporty.
I personally have a genesis coupe. the Turbo gives it a nice kick. If you can afford it, get the v6 with auto. Powerful engine with a nice ZF automatic transmission and you wont have to worry about subpar manual transmission (and its infamous 5th gear grind)

There are already so many GC discussion, and many RFD bias here seems to hate it for some odd reasons...
for example
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/do-you-like-genesis-coupe-1171341/
Planning on getting a 2012 Gen Coupe in a few months. I have a few questions for you RFDers…
1. How do you see the Gen Coupe (price wise, style wise, ect.)?
- best bang for the buck! get the 3.8L V6, 2.0T is underpower
2. If you own one, what model is it and how do you find it overall in terms of ownership and the kind of response you get from people?
- i have the 3.8 V6, love it, but you get what you pay for, my 2010 has the cheaper interior materials, and navi may not respond peroperly sometimes, say 20% of the time
3. Is Nordschleife Grey the best colour?
- i like my White, yellow is very rare
4. Do you like or dislike the Genesis Coupe and why (brand snob, looks, ect.)?
- i love it alot, it may not perform as expected, but it's a great head turner!
Please see my quote in red

If the stick really is that bad, look at a used G35 or 350Z instead. A sports car with auto sucks.

What do you mean it's a rebadged Tiburon? There isn't a Tiburon out right now so this can't be a rebadge of something that is not being sold...
OP, if you're thinking of getting the coupe, it's only available starting from 2010. If you're gonna get a 2010-2012 coupe, get the V6 as the V4 is underpowered, as some have already mentioned. If you're gonna go for the 2013, you can get the V4 as it got a significant power increase.

You're joking right?
Hyundai has stated the Genesis Coupe is not intended as a successor to the similar Hyundai Coupe (Tiburon or Tuscani in some markets).
The Veloster is the successor of the Tiburon.
I'd get you the references but you're just hating ;)

The Tiburon (96 -08) was a front engine front wheel drive 2+2 coupe, the Genesis Coupe (08-pres) a front engine rear wheel drive 2+2 coupe. The successor to the Tiburon is probably the Veloster as mentioned.

Im talking on looks. I dont even think the Gen coupe looks all that great, dont see what all the fuss is about. All current Hyundais are hideously overdone and try way too hard to impress on looks. Unfortauntely a Hyundai isnt going to impress anyone. Ive been in one 4 months ago and wasnt impressed. Theres less leg room in the gen coupe than my civic wtf. I can sit in my civic with enough room so my knees dont touch anything but in the gen coupe my knees bash into the steering column even after adjusting everything as far as they would go. Dealbreaker. Plus the car is absolutely huge and the front end is massive. I mean like albatross massive, so big you would think theyre housing a v10 in there or something. But i wouldnt spend more than 10k on any Hyundai new or not. In 3 years no one will care for any of its looks cause they wont age well at all. 10k, Thats about what itll be worth in 5 years.
For the price of a gen coupe id much rather get an S2000, much better car and hold its value like glue.

I don't give a **** what hyundai stated, they are in denial. The genesis looks just like a tiburon, appeals to the same type of market and came to existence the same time the tiburon went out. Yes I hate hundie but this isn't an example of me hating - it's just common sense observation. Veloster is nothing like it..

Mad Hyundai hating going on here lol.
I will just say I have a 2013 2.0T R-spec Coupe and I couldn't be happier with it. And I came from owning a G35. When someone asks who makes it and I tell them it's a Hyundai, most people don't seem as curious about the car anymore lol. I've been criticized about going from Infiniti to the crooked H from people I know, but it's not their money spent and I love living with it every day.
And lastly...LOL @ Genesis = Tiburon

Manuals are relatively pointless in this day and age. The big advantages they historically had - being faster and more fuel efficient - are gone. Why buy a manual version of a car when the auto is faster?
Sure there are days when it's more 'fun' to drive, but those are greatly overshadowed by the days when driving a manual is a huge hassle (ie commuting in traffic).
I've owned more manuals than automatics in my life... but in this day and age I really can't see myself downgrading to a manual car.
awestruck
Jul 17th, 2012, 08:57 AM
Nothing wrong with getting an auto for a sports car. I would only get manual if you lived outside of Toronto/(smaller town), had overnight work hours and need to drive, or take your car to the track. Other than that, I don't even want to imagine driving a manual in Toronto traffic...
Check TD Meloche Monnex for insurance. They usually have decent rates if you're affiliated with one of their recognized groups.

then why are all performance cars auto only? can you even name one high end performance car that comes with manual?
manuals are fun, but they are detrimental to performance or gas mileage. They are like manual roll down windows of yesteryears.

actually, high end performance cars has Dual Clutch, Twin-clutch, DCT, SMG, DSC, etc.... the theory & mechanism of these transmission found in high-end performance vehicle is closer to a manual transmission more than an automatic trasmission

My daily driver is a manual and I have no issues. It all depends on preference.
My old car (88 Audi) had a really heavy clutch, so city traffic wasn't fun.
But my current car (06 BMW) has a relatively lighter clutch, and I find it quite fine in any environment.
Why drive manual for a daily driver? More control, really.
When I get into an auto, it's hard to gauge what happens when you push the gas. If there's uphill approaching, I can easily shift into a lower gear in a manual.. in an auto, I know there's gonna be lag learning time before the car realizes it needs a different gear.
Also, winter driving is much easier in a manual :)

yes, i will correct you because they all have "automated" in front of it. be it DSG, SMG or whatever and has a computer chip deciding what gear you should be in and what rpm to "launch" at.

Hey - are u buying Manual? If so I would avoid the GC. Lots of transmission issues. I was test driving the GC when comparing to FRS/BRZ and I just could not feel comfortable driving the car.
As for a first car its a nice one for sure. I would personally go for the FRS if your willing to spend the money.
Good on you for buying your own car instead of using your parents money!

So it took Hyundai 3 years to finally get it right? Not exactly a good way to sell to customers if youask me. Hyndai got it right with finally no gear grinding in 2013, but still Honda is the king of MTs.

I'm 6'5 and 330 and easily fit in the Veloster. For the price Hyundai absolutely demolishes the competition with standard offerings. Haters going to hate, but even the resell values are holding up well now. It's just cool to hate Hyundai.

Who said anything about a 370? Yeah they are nice but used pruces are about the same as a base 3.8 GC... the new one at that. The GC is understated for sure but i think if OP or anyone was going to buy a 1st generation model they are better off getting a 350z instead. it is a nice car.. More practical than a s2k and miata or rex8 in reliability. best sounding engine exhaust note in that sports car price range.
Thats just my opinion. I like the hyundai but it has kind of waned away to become somewhat of a joke car with punks who think they drive an exotic but a z is a z.
