Hello, I'm planning on buying a car.
I found an '08 Civic which I might buy. It has about 70,000km and sells for about $11K.. is this a good price?

Also, what are good insurance companies?
I have never owned a car before, but for a time (about a year or two) I was a secondary driver on a family member's vehicle. Would this decrease my insurance costs for the car I'm about to buy. I also have that certificate for completing a driver's ed course for the G2.
What's an estimate on monthly insurance cost? Would it be cheaper if a family member bought insurance on it and I was listed as a secondary driver (since the family member would have more driving experience)?

Thanks

Stay away from common cars like that.. play around with the online calculators to see just how much it can make a difference.
You'll be spending more than the purchase price of that car just in the first few years of insurance :p

I don't think insurance companies value the history as highly if it's discontinuous. i.e. if you were still listed as secondary on someone's policy, you'd be in a better situation.

#2 would reduce your rates, but if you're using the car more than half of the time, it's fraud to not be listed as primary and they will cancel you and/or deny claims if they find out. That will definitely hurt your future rates.

With little driving history a 'good' insurance company is one that doesn't charge you a kidney per month. Start there. ;)

shop around for insurance. the one that will be cheaper for you won't be the same that will be cheaper for me. Each one has their own formula to calculate their price.

Use kanetix and the other online comparison site, forget the name.

Buy a Buick not a Civic - your insurance on the Civic will be *painful*, seriously. Like - here's some money, let's put it in the fire and burn it to keep warm type expensive.

Oh, I bought a 2004 Civic 2 years ago now, so it would've been 6-7 years old at the time, with 160k for $5k. Would I pay twice as much for (effectively) a 2 year newer car, admittedly with a lot fewer kms? No... this car should go for a long while yet. Depends how much spare cash you have I guess!

What is your age?
Male? Female?
Do you live in the GTA? or outside?
I'm guessing you are younger probably around 20 & male. Dont expect to pay anything less then $3,000+/year if you are the main driver.

I am 26, M and currently insured as a secondary driver with my G for 2 years. I have a $3500 budget for a used vehicle and am thinking of a Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic or a Saturn Ion from the early 2000s. I am not too keen on the Sunfire/Cavaliers as they look ugly and tend to rust very quickly. Anyone have any good suggestions for an all around cheap and reliable vehicle?
