I posted a smal job there. Paid an up front fee, now the contractor has gone awol on me for the past 48 hours.

The guy had good reviews and one of the highest worked hours in all applicants.

The payment was 20 bucks. So not a huge deal. Is it normal for odesk contractors to gi awol? Should i just end the contract and hire another guy?

You should contact ODesk Support and see what they say. You should ask for a refund.

Yea unfortunately fixed price payments are not disputable. Oh well. I'm hiring another guy on an hourly basis.

I have used oDesk both for hiring and for getting projects. It is by far the best of the freelance sites I have used. You can't dispute the fixed rate projects, but you can leave him negative feedback or tell him you will leave negative feedback if he doesn't return your money.

It's hard to get your money back. I suggest you to hire people to work with hourly based payment. With that way you can control what they are doing and how many hours they work.
