I'm looking to get a natural gas hookup as i recently got a good deal on a NG BBQ.

I called up one guys and he sent me his quote (below) which shows it may cost me quite a bit. Have you got one done recently? Do you have any recommendations? Would it be cheaper to convert the NG to LP instead? It's a Weber BBQ

We have a basic charge of $325.00- this includes getting a truck to your home, installing
tee, shut off valves etc., cost of City gas permit and inspection, and relighting all your
pilot lights after gas is turned back on. A shut off is installed where we tee off and also
another at the barbecue location. This way if we run from the furnace room you can shut
the gas off inside if you go on holidays.
In addition we charge $10 per foot for material and labor- piping and fittings
Example 10 foot line would be 325 basic + 10 ft. @10/ft= 325 +100= $425.00
If the line is over 20 feet the city requires that an air test be put on the line. This adds
$100.00 to the cost of putting air test and also making a return trip to remove air test after
City inspector has passed the job.
Example 30 foot line would be 325 basic + 30 ft. @ 10/ft + 100 return trip/air test
325+300+100= $725.00

All depends on your layout of pipes. Standard rates are in line with what I've seen, the air test bit brings up the cost a lot if your run is excessively long. I don't think they require that here, never heard of it.

As aqnd mentions here in the GTA, those prices are about right. I too have not heard of the air test.

The cost could also go up if your supply line needs to be upgraded to a larger size diameter.

depends on if you get a permit or not.

When i got mine a few years ago, it was 180 or 190 without a permit. With a permit was over 500$. I went without a permit.

Very much in-line with what I've been quoted in the past - about $450 for ~20 foot run. Called at least half-a-dozen people. Recently bought a new construction home and builder wants $460 - was the only competitively priced upgrade on the list!

Ok, just checked around and looks like if I'm to convert this BBQ to LP, it will cost me around $250 vs getting a hookup for $500. If the price is right I might have to do it without permit. I heard there are two problems without permit 1. home insurance wont conver if there is fire 2. when you sell your house you have to get the permit anyway? is that true?

While there may be some truth to the insurance company not covering a fire, they would have prove it was specifally caused by a inproper installed gas line.

As for selling, in Alberta, a gas line is not listed on a real property report, so unless the buyer specifically asks for a permit of the gas hookup, its a non issue. I sold my place in Edmonton 1.5 years ago and it didnt have a permit.

Thanks, if that's the case re selling the property - I dont see any reason to pay for the permit especially when I'm getting this done by a pro anyway.
