Hey,
I was looking at purchasing a small pair of bookshelve speakers to hook up to my samsung plasma as was wondering is it possible to run these through to the TV without having a receiver? I want a better sound quality than the existing tv but don't really have space/need ofr a full system as the TV is ontop of the dresser in my room.
Also I have no clue what is good in line with brands or deals, any suggestions for a pair around $100-120 (dont know if possible) would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Without a receiver, the speakers would need to be the powered type.

You are best getting a soundbar like the Vizio from Costco at $119.99

Assuming your TV has audio out connections, they will invaribly be line-level outputs (RCA plugs) which will not power standard speakers. As mentioned above, you'd need powered speakers (speakers with amplifiers build in) - like computer speakers, which you can use..

A lot of people buy computer speakers set attached to their TV for a cheap audio set up.
Just make sure your tv has the same audio out as the speaker set input end.

Yeah, sounds like the best solution for you is a soundbar. The Yamahas are quite good, but won't be as cheap as the Vizio.

Our local XS Cargo has one of these Samsung sound bars: http://www.shopxscargo.com/product_catalogue/cat_product_details.asp?category_id=6&product_code=32093&sub_category_1_id=13&category=Audio
Why don't you try it and tell us what's wrong with it? I'm curious about what could be wrong with a speaker system to made it end up at XS Cargo. Some of them wired up backwards? Painted with toxic lead paint?

Only 2 things about this item. It is last years model and it is refurbished. Those are the only things that would stand out. The product is about what you would expect.
Funny thing is I didn't see a price on the web site for the item.

If you are really keen on using bookshelfs then a small amp will do the trick. They don't seem to sell much of any in Canada. Parts-Express has tons of them from $20-300... I have some cheaper $20-40 ones that work well for what they do.
