View Full Version : Took a "little" risk today... $150 for "New" 60D (Diverta Shop)

sylpherware
Jul 17th, 2012, 02:44 PM
tl;dr version: I went with a highly probable scam of buying a Canon 60D for $150, and now I'm having my fingers crossed.

So, anybody who has been using UsedAnywhere.com has probably found this little gem yesterday:
Canon 60D for $150! (http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/Canon-EOS-60D-SLR_17733535)
I wrote the seller: "Serious? 60D for $150?"
And got this email response:

Hello,

Thank you for the interest in our product Canon EOS 60D SLR 18 Megapixel (price $150). We have for sale on internet many products like electronics and computers. All our products are new. We own them from auctions from goods seized from custom house. The price that we paid for the products was very low and with our commission result a very attractive price for the marketplace. This is the reason for our low prices.

The product is new, sealed, with 2 years warranty.

Also you have some pictures with our product here http://s1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg583/album4534/

If you really want the product, you must hurry, because we have a limited stock and that stock is falling every day. We are waiting your answer ASAP.

Sincerely,
Diverta Shop™

At the same time, the mods at UsedAnywhere sent me this warning:

Hi I'm a moderator. You sent a message on UsedVictoria.com responding to ad with id 17731637 and with title Canon EOS 60D SLR 18 Megapixel.

I have reason to believe that the ad was fraudulent. If the seller agrees to meet with you in person then I am likely mistaken. But if they want you to send money please stop all communication with them. Best to leave them in the dark.

Please do not be fooled by fake moderation emails stating the transaction is safe. Our moderation team will never tell you it's safe to send your money!

So I sent the site to my photo-buddies and had a good laugh. That was last night.

This morning, I got this follow-up email from Diverta

Hello,

We understand that you have seen the product details and you are interested in buying it.

If you want to buy the camera, please go to our web site www.diverta-shop.com and make an order at Checkout page. When will receive your order, we'll send you the invoice for the payment. Payment must be done by PayPal Checkout and must be sent within 24 hours. Delivery will take 5 business days.

So I asked them where are they located. I got this:

We are located in Canada but the shipping is free only in Canada.

We are waiting for your order.

I figured, $150 is not *that* big of a bet, and the only real risk is giving them my personal info. Since they're doing it through paypal, that lowered my worries a bit. :o

Anyway, I went with it, paid $150 through paypal, gave them my work address instead of home, and changed my email and paypal passwords after the transaction. Paypal registered the transaction, so I'm sure they didn't send me a fake invoice. Now I'm just hoping for the best. If not, let this be a lesson to others out there and keep an eye out for "Diverta Shop". ;)

Cheers,

p.s. I whois'd diverta-shop.com, and saw they have only registered the domain yesterday

150 for a brand new 60D? It's too good to be true. Since you're paying it with PayPal, you can always make a claim if it's turned out to be fraudulent. Keep us posted!

if they were to ship you rocks and can provide a tracking number, you`re screwed.

paypal transactions outside of ebay does not cover the item description.

Noted. Actually, I'm kinda glad to know that this won't show up on my CC bill. I can't imagine how I'd explain it to the wife: "Uh, yea, I willingly became a test-subject of a scam."

If anything, I'll just sell off the lenses I don't use to recover the cost.

If Paypal can't recover the funds you sent, they usually don't take the loss. That is why paying with a credit card through your paypal is best as it adds for an extra layer of protection (dispute with CC as opposed to with Paypal). I really hope you didn't lose your $150 but I guess you understood the risks going into this.

There is a reason all the email spam just keeps on going even after all these years. They send out to a guzzillion people, and the odds are some people would respond and makes the scammer's operation profitable. I thought paypal doesn't release the fund unless the seller proves that they have "sent something"?

X820
Aug 9th, 2012, 05:41 PM
Nah, if it's through ebay, then yes the fund won't be available instantly. But if they sent you an invoice through paypal and you paid for it, it's instant.

Expect a month for the dispute, or even better, call your credit card company to claim the fund. It's faster to do it through your bank instead of paypal, given that you paid through paypal using your credit card.

Hey ,

Sorry for this late reply but I have been overwhelmed by the number of emails I got from interested buyers after listing the camera. As you can know the price is 1200 $ ( a little bit negotiable) this includes body and lens .The Canon is like new and under warranty .I am selling it so low because I need to sell it before August 23th.

I already have tons of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out and I hope you won't make me loose time as it has already happened to me. If you will decide to buy it I am willing to pay for the shipping costs . If you are still interested e-mail me back .
