A 17-year-old male is in critical condition following a brutal machete attack in Scarborough Wednesday morning, after he refused to let his attacker use his cellphone.

Police said the youth was waiting at a bus stop at McCowan Rd., north of Sheppard Ave. E. just before 4:40 a.m. when he was approached by a man who asked to use his phone.

Police said that after the 17-year-old refused, the man began to stab him with a machete.

As the boy ran, the man ran after him, continuing to slash at him from behind.

The boy attempted to flag down several cars on McCowan Rd. before a TTC bus stopped to assist him, as the stabbing continued.

As the bus driver called 911, the attacker ran away, then came back and continued the assault. The attacker then ran east with the boy’s phone, police said.

Police located the accused under a car nearby and arrested him.

The 17-year-old youth was brought to Sunnybrook Hospital with stab wounds on his chest, back, and arms.

“There were so many cuts the doctor didn’t even count how many there were,” police said.

The attack seemed “almost personal” in its brutality, police said, but noted there is currently no indication it was anything other than a robbery.

The youth remains in very serious condition at Sunnybrook Hospital, police said.

Gajan Pooniah, 19, of Markham is charged with attempted murder and robbery.

Lots of people need to get to work for 5:30 or 6am, especially factory / delivery jobs, could be that. 4:40 is a bit late to be out still, and a bit early to be going to work, but it could be.

I'm not sure why but these types of people have an obsession over cell phones. Not only that, they like to use or steal cell phones that belong to other people. I've had, on several occasions in Scarborough, similar incidents where these types of guys guys would come up to me and say they need to make a call or they want to see my phone. Then they would try to grab my cell out of my hands. They didn't attack me with a machete but they seemed pretty pissed after I ruined their plan by not letting them take it.

if this were the states you could just give them the cell phone, and then pull a gun on them. :)

this is messed up. ive seen people get attacked for little to nothing so its not as surprising any more. people acting like animals should be treated as such.

At times of the day I keep on considering a life in Richmond Hill or just living safely for that matter. Why is that not realistic with how Toronto is being managed now? Time to move to Australia?

I don't like councillor minnan-wong. He's greatly contributed to horrible decisions made in the city.

This has to be something personal, if not between the two guys, then with the stabber himself.

You don't do something like that for any typical robbery, and if the stabber was at all competent, the kid would be dead right now.

Define 'machete'. I have a big chef's knife at home that someone could call a machete, and I'm sure a good deal of the camping gear sold at Canadian Tire would also qualify.

Pretty much anywhere else. Banks pay incredibly pitiful amounts to use your money, and may actually charge you for it. Mutual funds, bonds, stocks, etc. Pretty much anything other than a bank account will give you a greater ROI.

Phones are an item that is easily lost or stolen or damaged, therefore it's stupid to carry around a phone that is more expensive than what you can easily afford to lose. If you are a millionaire then losing a $700 galaxy 3 means nothing to you, so go ahead and carry around your S3. If you're an above average but not millionaire like me, than up to about $200 is what you can tolerate to lose without feeling too bad. But if your some broke kid who makes $800/month at his part time job, then you should be carrying the $49 7-11 flip-phone, nothing more.

from the grapevine though, no idea if it's true or not, but it makes a bit more sense why he would go back to get the phone and then just hide right there and not fully run away. still messed up beyond belief.

Remember the Asian dude who killed that other Asian dude in the library with a crossbow?

Interesting weapon of choice is interesting.

from what i've heard from the grapevine, the guy attacked the dude because he had nude pics of his sister on his phone. when they arrested him he was crying and a mess.

Then he withdrew his machete that he carries around with him all the time and proceeded to hack and slash him?

Or he knew beforehand that this guy had pics of his sis naked and wanted revenge?

I am going to guess the latter but the former is hilarious scenario.....should be made into a movie or something...

The first thought that popped into my mind is....It must have been an Iphone.

It should be in their next commercial; "The only phone worth stabbing a complete stranger for". Or, "Iphone, it is stabulous".

But these criminal thug low-lives are all over Scarborough. It's what we've been discussing on OT for the past two days.

Some idiots here that defend Scarborough to death will argue that 'Walking around at 4 am in the morning on the streets of Scarborough is safe' and will say this is an isolated case. Wrong.

let me try.

3 shootings in North York vs 1 in Scarborough.

Machete attacker from Markham...

sure it makes Scarborough looks bad when any other attack/shooting/crimes don't get lumped in with an area as big as Scarborough.

I understand the comparison but I'm referring to those 'Muggings' or being 'Jumped/Robbed'. Most of these do not make the mainstream media.

I somehow think my friend has a connection through his friend to the victim and the stabber.

I was with my friend today and I elaborated on the updated story about how the story on the news says that the victim may of had nude pictures of the stabber's sister. Then he got the phone and started speaking to somebody about how the truth is being bent around now and the news outlets are getting it wrong and then speaking some Tamil (which I obviously don't understand lol). Something fishy that he doesn't feel comfortable telling me...

Edit: I just realised I got this info from RFD. :facepalm

Racist? No Canadian would use a machete to attack someone. A hockey stick I would beleive.
