I am trying to merge two partitions, but "Extend Volume" is greyed out. What should I do?

You can't merge the boot partition. You must reinstall windows and format it the way you want it in the first place.

When you install windows 7 on a new hard drive, it always make the 100mb partition
So if you don't want that. You should format the new hard drive 1st and then install windows 7 on it. And it won't make the 100mb partition anymore.

If you have a spare drive then you can backup your system to it, repartition the drive and then move back your install. How did it come to be this way, BTW?

What? Yes you can. I do it all the time.
Gparted.

[Insert Caveat about backing up your system here]
I've done it 100s of times (literally) and have had zero issues, but there's always a chance you can accidentally your entire partitions so make sure you back up.

@op -- There's a program called easybcd (in case you mess up your boot partition)
