Think I going to have a beef with Ebay. Bid on this antique pocket watch $115. Said I was leading bidder, in last hour I signed in said I was out bid, so I bid $130. Again came back I was outbid. So, I gave up on it and bid on another watch I liked even better. Then signed on again said I was leading bid on first watch for $115. What the hell??? Either bidder withdrew his bid or seller declined his bid. Now I won 2 watches from 2 different buyers, but only want one.

Man, you're one of those people that needlessly drives up the prices of auctions all the way until the final seconds. Sigh.

Lol the secret of eBay bidding is to bid last minute (or second). That's the whole point. So they can rack up the price. Sorry but you have to pay for both items. You messed up

Email ebay and let them know.
Also, tell the seller what happened, and say sorry it isnt your fault, it is ebays fault and that you have emailed them.
I find they are generally pretty good with support for this type of thing.
they will most likely just let the guy re-list for free

Something doesn't sound right here. Did you try to contact the seller about the first watch? If the highest bid was not retracted or cancelled by seller, you shouldn't be the highest bidder when the auction ended. I definitely would work with the seller first.

He was out-bid on something, and moved on to bid on something in his price range and he won. What's wrong with that?
His point is he was under the indication that someone else wanted to spend more money than him on a product, so he left it for that person to win. That person backed out, and he's now left having to buy the item he was out-bid on.
I completely agree with OP IF what he says is in fact true.

How is this EBAY's fault?

Someone can't cancel a bid with the last 12 hrs. However the seller can cancel a bid. It could've been the sellers other account to help drive up the price.

The seller retracted the bid, sounds like he was shilling

Contact the seller and explain the situation.
The transaction can be cancelled and the seller will be reimbursed the listing fees.
(so long as the seller agrees)

I hate these people!!!
I don't get how they don't understand the best way to get the cheapest price is to wait until the very end of an auction to throw a bid in there. Even people who bid with more than a minute left tick me off. I swear I see at least one of these people in every auction I am interested in.
Now you could argue it's the seller "shill bidding" but that can't always be the case!
Couple weeks ago I was looking at two iPod Nanos (4GB and 8GB) going for $5 and $7 each. They were being sold by the same person. Before you ask about the price, they were being sold as-is/broken because of slight issues (one had a broken backlight and the other claimed to "be unable to connect to itunes).
4GB auction was ending 5 mins before the 8GB one and with 15 minutes left it ended up jumping from $5 all the way to $16 because of 2 people bidding back and fourth driving the price up. I thought that might happen to the 8GB one too and I didn't want to miss out on both so I sniped the 4GB auction at the end with 6 seconds left for $16.50.
Fast forward 5 minutes to the ending of the 8GB one and what do ya know, NO ONE bid and it ended up going for $7. I would have bid, but I won the first and there's no reason for me to buy two iPods.
So yeah while I obviously don't mind paying the price I bid (or else I wouldn't have made the offer), I hate knowing I could have gotten it much cheaper if it weren't for two idiots bidding back and fourth driving the price up. I don't believe it was the seller because he had quite a few auctions ending soon and no one drove up the 8GB one.

Yes, everyone knows ebay's "real" process happens in the last minute before closing.
What I do is typically just add an item to my "watch list" and re-check it about 1h before closing. Usually items in auctions on ebay (especially the Canadian one) tend to rise up to their market value (if you add in shipping and taxes if it's a US item). If by then I predict it's too high to bother I won't. Most of the time I'm right.

I love that tool, especially when babies like you start crying about it.
Either play the game or get off the field.

It's annoying but that's the way it goes. But yeah in you may get it at a reasonable price when the time is about to close. So you have to just check the proper time.

I don't understand the logic here. Ebay does proxy bidding; you set the max you want to pay, and Ebay will automatically up your bid.
Whose fault is it that you didn't set the max you wanted to pay?

Teehee. You are losing to people like me. 2fast4you.
I have never lost a hot bidding war when the price was still reasonable. And I only do manual bidding.
Anyway, King of Clones, you need to speak to the seller about it. If seller won't cancel your auction/win, bring it up with eBay. I'm sure there are records of other (potential shill) bids and the like in their system.

this has happened to me many times, just tell one of the sellers your situation and politely ask them to cancel the transaction

Cleared it with Seller...Glad I started the thread thou because learned of Sniper. Been dozens of times outbid in last seconds. It does piss you off. Something I will be looking into.
He said he declines all bids from bidders with poor rating. But I always felt other times in past I have been victim of seller using another account to drive up the price. I say this because once bidding didn't go usual. Being outbid, then checked seller's feedback and item had positive feedback. I complain to Ebay, but I got a semi-nasty email from them saying seller commented buyer picked up item that day. Technically it is possbile, but I always fell there was too much there.

+1. Set a price you're happy with, if someone goes over in the last two seconds, so be it, there'll be a ton more of the same item.
