TORONTO, Ont. - Toronto police are searching for four suspects after an armed robbery in a Tim Horton's parking lot in the city's east-end late Thursday night.
The incident took place at Consumers Road and Victoria Park Avenue at around 11 p.m.
Police said a man meeting to buy some electronics in a per-arranged Kijiji deal when he was pepper-sprayed and robbed of around $2,000 by four masked men armed with guns.
There are reports one of the bandits was armed with a machine gun.
Scary...take care when arranging meetings like this. Never know if you're just being trolled for a cash grab. The victim seemed to have done most of the right things in terms of meeting place, etc. Only thing I would have done different is meet up at an earlier time, but that's just me. I've heard of people meeting up at bank machines for larger transactions but that scares me even more...

The way I read it from the Global TV article (http://www.globaltoronto.com/3+suspects+sought+in+east-end+robbery/6442682748/story.html), it sounds like they arranged to meet inside the restaurant, but no one showed, so the buyer returned to his car and that's when the robbery happened. So these guys were likely lying in wait outside watching him carefully. I've certainly been asked "What do you look like"/"What car do you drive" prior to meeting up...

Seller should have met inside first so the video camera there would have recorded the suspect then go to the car...sometimes if its large item buyer was to met outside...The suspect more than likely park far away from the suspect on a different street or walked over..he cant stupid enough to park in Tim Hortons parking lot...I sometimes do deals at night but always in a coffee shop or Micky's...never inside a car....

I met up with someone from RFD and another forum. The difference was there were many of my posts for him to sift through to decide whether or not I was going to take the money and run. We met and he phoned me and identified my by me answering the phone. We figured out where we wanted to trade and we were off. That was at Yorkdale.
I used that money ($1900) to buy something from someone I messaged on Ebay. Me and the Ebay guy talked for 1/2 hour, so he knew I was serious about what I wanted. We met at Fairview, he brought a friend, I didn't. I identified them by finding the two guys that didn't look like they belonged there (they LOL'ed when I told them that).
Both exchanges were in the day and in malls.

I've done about 50 (give or take a couple) deals on rfd and kijiji together. Never had any issues.
One member here who couldn't leave feedback due to some wierd forum issue came to my house to buy a MacBook pro I didn't want anymore. Gave me the $1000 cash, checked out my reptiles and went on his way

In this particular case, I don't think it would have mattered. I would agree on meeting at an earlier time, as for the place, it can happen almost anywhere. Think about it - we are talking about four guys with pepper spray and guns (including a machine gun). If he didn't have the cash on him, they would have driven him to the bank to get it.

Must meet at a mall (usually in high-traffic areas like a bank) and deal must be done in daytime and in public. Also I would bring a intimidating black friend if it was a big transaction.

I buy a ton of tickets off Kijiji, bought some from a guy in Ottawa. He used a fake name & email (which I've got a bunch of times) but then when we got to the place (a museum parking lot) he got me to like get out of my car and see me (lol) before he would get out with the tickets. Then he told me he used the fake name etc.
I was kind of confused at the great length that someone would go to over $100 tickets, but to each their own. If it was a situation that was actually sketchy enough to warrant a friend or precautions then I'd probably back out of doing it anyway (i.e. "meet me at 11pm"). I always google the person before hand, can find out their job, their twitters, facebooks, google plus, etc. I've never met a thug with a google plus account, lol, so that's a pretty good safety indicator

This.
If the transaction is big enough, then call the police division before hand and meet in the waiting area, where it's well lit, has active coloured cameras and you're visible to the admin police staff.
Otherwise, meet inside a bank during business hours near the bank tellers or ask a mall security guard before hand to supervise the transaction from afar.
I would NEVER meet in a Tim Horton's parking lot at night with that much money. I'll admit - I have met people in dark parking lots before, but that was only for 3D nVidia glasses and gaming mice.
The only issue I have ever had with Kijiji was when I sold a laptop. This hillbilly showed up at the meeting spot and tried to give me 100$ of CANADIAN TIRE MONEY when he said he would bring the full cash amount with him (300$ cash). What a waste of time. This was 2-3 years ago - no issues since then. Last transaction was a Razer Gaming Mouse @ a local campus - went smoothly.

East end as in Scarborough?
I thought usually here in RFD we have those from the east end that say 'Its the media, I've grown up here all my life with no issues, its perfectly safe to walk around Scarborough at night, or even complete a RFD transaction'. Well here is more proof of that logic being wrong.

***** people..why would you ever meet up in scarborough especially at 11pm..i grew up in scarborough and the day kijiji and craigslist was invented i allways said it would be so easy to rob people(sorry for the scarborough mentality) .. you go to the library to make the email account or posting.. or if your buying something just use a telus pre paid phone with a fake name..which every "goon" has.. im surprised this is the first time ive heard someone get robbed... as far as areas i would never meet up in would be scarborough unless its port union... i usually meet downtown, once i was going to deliver something to someone when i googled thier address it was near jane and wilson.. i quickly called said i couldnt make it..next day said it was sold..***** that *****

You could do it anywhere as you deem it safe and public lol
Idk try going to the police station 30 minutes beforehand and ask somebody "could I do a kijiji deal here so I know I'm safe?" if they're nice enough than go ahead. If not move your trading location into a bank. Even if you do the deal at the police station's door I see nothing wrong with that (though I would prefer a location with CCTV). There is not any legal grounds people could stand on that makes your transaction an illegal one if done at a government institution. (I believe)

I asked a few weeks ago by phone and they said I could do it in the police lobby/waiting area. I was thinking about selling a high-ticket item, that's why I called in to find out.
They asked me the value of the item, I said "1,200$", they replied "fine, no problem (in a happy tone of voice)".

...I always google the person before hand, can find out their job, their twitters, facebooks, google plus, etc. I've never met a thug with a google plus account, lol, so that's a pretty good safety indicator
I know this is off topic, but I have a funny story along these same lines...
I was selling an item on craigslist once and some guy messaged me with a ridiculously low ball offer that was less than half my asking price. He included some sob story about how he really needed the item, but couldn't afford to pay a lot for it because he was a new immigrant from Kenya and only had a part time job making minimum wage.
Normally I ignore those types of offers, but I was intrigued enough to google the guy's email address... I found a posting that he had on kijiji where he was selling some item and was asking potential buyers to either email him or call him at home.
I copied down did the phone number from the kijiji ad and did a reverse phone search online. I found the guy's home address and full name. I then googled the name and discovered that he worked for the Ontario Ministry of Health and was actually on the Sunshine List of provincial employees who made more than $100,000. I also found his work phone number, work email address and the name of his boss.
I probably should have ended things there, but I was angry at the way the guy had lied to me, so I emailed him and said that he could have the item for his lowball price. We arranged to meet the next day and I selected a location that was far away from both his home and office.
The next day I never showed up, and when he emailed me I said that something had come up and I had been unable to attend. We arranged to meet again the next day at the same place, and once again I never showed up lol.
He messaged me that night, and I could tell he was upset. I told him it served him right for lying to me. He actually replied saying that he hadn't been lying, so I sent him a reply that included his real name, his home address, his home phone number, the name of his employer, his job title, the name of his boss, and his salary!
The guy freaked out and sent me multiple messages asking how I had obtained all that info. I told him that I knew lots more about him and his family, and warned him that if he ever messaged me again, he would seriously regret it.
Needless to say, he never replied lol! I like to think that the guy was was walking around scared ****less for a little while after that

For Edmonton member reference, RCMP K division on Kingsway and the EPS community stations have no problem if you want to meet there to exchange a Kijiji/Craigslist item. Just call them ahead of time and speak with the desk sargent to confirm it is ok. I've met someone who bought a laptop without problems that way.
Going to Timmies with 2k at 11pm at night in a shady area is just stupid. Lesson learned...

I met with a 350lb 6'9"-ish guy at 3:00am besides a jail a few months ago. I wasn't the least bit worried though, as he was on another forum that I frequent, and did my homework on him before I decided to meet. Deal went smooth - turned out he did security at the jail.
If you are not able to do any background check on the person you are dealing with, and it is a high dollar item, always meet in daylight in a public place.
That sounds like Shaner. He is a big guy and he is always in jail (as a correctional officer).

Wow I just did a transaction there a few weeks ago.
I sold a cheap phone at 10:30pm. Met the buyer (a lady with her family) in the parking lot.
I asked them to meet in Tim's but they were in a minivan with their kid.
Next time I'll be careful. Weird thing is that Timmies is usually busy in the parking lot even at night.
Maybe it happened in the rear of the store.

About 2 months ago I was going to buy a phone for around $350 at 10pm. Told the guy to meet me inside the Tim Hortons and he said okay. Then he later said he was outside and told me to come outside. Replied back to him saying I'm not coming out and I immediately thought he was trying to do something shady. I knew he was probably trying to scope me out in the Tim Hortons so I acted like a normal guy who went in to get an ice cap.
The guy messages me after describing each and every guy in the Tim Hortons and saying how he was waiting for 30 mins. Good thing I didn't go out in the parking lot or else I would have been in a similar situation.
