hello,

i have a spare blackberry that i wanted to get activated for my son (unlocked gsm), as he would only require the phone for limited use. There wouldn't be a lot of voice, but rather, more texting, primarily as we do pick up and drop off's for school and all his activities and this way it would be easier to communicate. I don't really need a big fancy plan, looking to keep the costs done but was wondering if anyone has any advise they can offer? it would be great if he could use bbm, but if that adds too much cost, then we will do with out.

thanks,

Hi,

I think you're in the same situation as Toopence, in that a prepaid plan would be the most economical. I'm going use Rogers plans for this discussion, even though another cell provider may meet your needs better. Would go with a "pay per minute" prepay plan as opposed to a BBM or monthly prepay plan because of the limited need for voice time. With a pay per minute voice plan, you'll only be charged for the actual voice minutes that you use. Would prepay with a $100 voucher, which has a 365 day expiry, this will also eliminate the need to top up your account with $20 every month. Would add on a texting package to complete the deal. If you activate your account online, Rogers lets you pick your own phone number(from their list of 50+ available numbers).

Hi,

Speakout & PetroCanada charge $1.25/month for the emergency access, whereas Rogers charges $.75/month. That adds up to a difference of $6/year.

Hi,

Speakout & PetroCanada charge $1.25/month for the emergency access, whereas Rogers charges $.75/month. That adds up to a difference of $6/year.

Weigh out the pro's and cons.

Speakout balance lasts all year. I use it cause NO long distance charges for Southern-Ontario (519/226-416/647-905/289).
