I know it seems odd to see someone asking about voip nowadays.
I recently signed up voip.ms and started their $5 "Unlimited" plan.
What I didn't know was that it wasn't ACTUALLY unlimited but only 3500 minutes per month.
I know voip.ms is a great service at a great price, but I just began work from home as a customer service agent, and if I'm aiming for 40 hours a week then I'm looking at:
40 hours x 4 weeks (per month)
= 180 * 60 (minutes per hours)
=10,800
So thats 10,800 minutes per month, I get my first 3500 free, so I only pay for 7300.
That's $73 on top of the $5 per month fee if in I use the $0.01/min premium line, and $36 if I use their $0.005 value line.
So I'm now looking to switch to a new service. I need a recommendation for a QUALITY, cheap (if possible) VOIP service. I plan to get an IP phone so I don't necessarily need a plan with an ATA box, but can also find use for one.
I'm curious about freephoneline.ca, but am not sure if they have a good solid voip line, or if they are good for my needs.
I need a service that supplies a Toronto 416 or 647 number, and all my calls will be local within toronto.
Does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

I am with FreePhoneLine since Jan 2011, so far everything is great. voice quality is very good, I am using a linksys SPA2102 and 3WEB cable internet as my internet service. I notice maybe a an hour or two downtime every two months but 50% of those is because of my internet service provider doing maintenance around my area.
I only paid $50+tax for FreePhoneLine and $60 for the Linksys SPA2102 hardware from NCIX (cheaper if you find a lower price match).
I also setup my parents house to freephoneline as well as a christmas gift and so far they are loving the savings vs their Telus monthly bill of $50/month.

I highly doubt he would be 8 hours non-stop a day. Atmost talk time is about 2-3 hours a day. If you're talking for 8 hours a day you must be working in a boiler room of some sorts...
But you would probably have to use some sort of commercial company for voip or maybe you can get a 416 number through voip,ms and transfer it to a POTS line? Atleast with a POTS you don't have to worry about the amount of minutes you use.

It sounds too good to be true really! Is their service really equally as good at that price? Are they just like any other voip company but with a different pricing structure? Also can i use any ATA or Voip phone with them?

Yea realistically it will be less hours... but I'm going to try and work as many hours as I can really.
Just graduated, not a lot of dough, and I'm going to be heading back to school soon without osap :-/

The trouble is we already have 2 POTS line in my house (and I heard you cant have more than 2 POTS at one home), and voip has the added advantage of mobility if I need to work away from home.
Thanks everyone for your replies so far!

It doesn't seem odd; people ask me about VoIP every day :D
What I didn't know was that it wasn't ACTUALLY unlimited but only 3500 minutes per month.
Their DID product is not and has never been unlimited. They should be advertising "flat rate". Hopefully that is the case.
Keep in mind, the flat rate plan is only for inbound calls and is intended for personal use only. Outbound calls are charged separately, and there is premium and value routing as you already know. Also note that there is no such thing as value routing for inbound calls.
If you receive a great deal of inbound calls, you may want to explain your needs to VoIP.ms and ask them for a quote on a Virtual PRI. Perhaps this would be more cost effective. Additionally, Callcentric's Office Unlimited product (http://www.callcentric.com/dids/office_unlimited) is in fact truly unlimited and may be used for business purposes. (Note that their outbound calling plans are NOT truly unlimited and, imho, are falsely advertised.) Callcentric also offers New York DIDs, completely free of charge. I have one and the audio quality is excellent. If the people calling you wouldn't complain about long distance charges, this is an another very cost-effective option.
With regards to FreePhoneLine, note that their terms state: "The Customer may make use of the Services solely for his/her own personal, residential use." In other words, they would probably terminate your account if you used it for business use, especially with the sheer volume of calls you're describing.
maybe you can get a 416 number through voip,ms and transfer it to a POTS line?
If you mean forward, not transfer, it's certainly possible. However, with this scenario you would need to pay for both legs of the call: approximately $0.01 per minute for the incoming call, plus $0.0125 (premium) or $0.0052 (value).
I heard you cant have more than 2 POTS at one home)
Anything is possible, however the phone company may need to run a new line to your house. They may charge for this, so it probably wouldn't be worth it for the short time until you get back to school.

Hey, so rather than making a new thread I will just update this one.
So it turns out I got confused and actually need Unlimited outgoing.
I found this service: http://www.callcentric.com/rate/plans/north_america_residential/
Has anyone else tried it or does anyone have any further recommendations?
