Everybody is motivated by different factors when they decide to buy a new vehicle. What was the primary factor behind buying your last one? Or what will be the main factor when you buy your next one?

Every 5-7 Years because as Car ages I think it consumes more gas than before.

Gas, unnecessary oversized yet slow and gas-guzzling vehicle with much of its space I'd never use.

Whenever I pass 200k, I replace it. Last November I replaced my 1999 CRV with a 2012 Kia Soul.

325,000km. Villager van was just about worn out. It's still on the road, though, 2 1/2 years later.

The repair was getting very expensive and got 0% on a new car so, why not :)

Because it had an automatic transmission.
Loved every aspect of it but just got bored driving an automatic. My weekend toy is a 6 speed manual and I dreaded jumping into my Explorer and putting it into "Drive." I still miss having a V8 AWD SUV but in the end I'm happier now. Only had it for about 2 years.

My family got a 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring to replace our old 1995 Honda Civic LX.
The Civic was bought brand new from a dealership 17 years ago. It had an engine replacement about 6 years ago and continued to run strong until recently it just wasn't worth it anymore to keep repairing it (with its recent issues; ranging from timing belt problems to something that was wearing out one side's tires). The air conditioning on it was just too weak even after fixing the coolant situation, and the body was getting worse and worse in terms of being rusted up. The seat belt for one of the seats was starting to get sketch also. It was nerve-wracking to drive the car in the rain/snow, lacked ABS and airbags (if I remember correctly) and but I basically grew up with that car from being a kid to now...it'll be missed. Transmission never had any issues; we got up to 380,000 (about 120,000 on the replacement engine).
The Hyundai Elantra Touring we got was the first time we got bought a brand new car since that Civic. We own 2 vehicles and we've gone through other vehicles that was our second vehicle (ranging from 2 different much older Accords, to our current 1998 Nissan Altima) but those have always been bought used.

Safety.
My previous minivan (2001 MPV): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtI7O9f0zY4
My current minivan (2010 Odyssey): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJjDTbG-lkE
Besides that, it also has a number of other safety features that the MPV didn't have.
The MPV was also costing me about $3000 annually in depreciation and $1000+ in repairs.

Replaced my 2000 Nissan Sentra for a 2008 Toyota RAV4 Limited.
Primary reason was repair cost would be too much vs the value of the car (200k+ km). Secondary reason was lifestyle change, no longer a student and have a FT job therefore willing to spend a bit more. Also needed an AWD for driving on snow (for snowboarding) or steep roads (camping, MBing)

Lost a 2006 Nissan Sentra (literally right after paying the whole thing off) -_-".
Got a Gen 4 Camry XLE from a friend. Decent point a to b car and I get crazy gas mileage (~600 KM easy highway). But sooo stinking boring to drive ><

Well soon you'd have been down to just $1000 in repairs as the value will be zero. :)

Why did you go from a Audi to a BMW?
because i was leasing the audi for 4 yrs and it was impossible to get out without a big penlty but the bmw was able to give a big discount to cover the difference so i switched over
but i can tell you the Audi is a much better car compare to the bmw i am driving right now

Desperately need a new vehicle 15 years old with 145k.It's more a status thing you can't own a business and meet important people driving a old vehicle.
Plus a bit of jealousy seeing everybody getting new vehicles

Take pride in the fact you were able to keep a car for that long (especially if it's in pristine condition)

Replaced our 1995 Honda Accord in dec 2008 due to age of car and 1 yr old baby.
Wife wanted a car that she wasn't afraid would break down in the highway with a baby in the back.
Plus air conditioner was broken and it was broken into and had the middle console ripped out.

Everybody has there own views^
Well I've already lost my brakes once and thank good I was able to coast into a parking lot $500 for New Lines. Almost got into an accident on the 401 when the coil pack grounded out and car shut off $400.
Just did all the brakes with a new muffler and wheel-bearing $600,Need new tires that's another $600 plus the air doesn't work in this heatwave:(
The car is barley worth $2500 on the black book website
So having a car-payment for a BMW,Infinity,Audi,Mercedes something with a warranty and peace of mind is worth it

My `02 Civic SiR got wrote off (rear ended) and sold my `03 G35C last year because too many punk kids were starting to buy them since they were getting old and "affordable" so I ordered a '11 335d.

I have a winter and summer car and they get changed every 2 years. I change the winter car one year and the summer car the next. Feels like a new car each year that way!

Changed my vehicle because needed more cargo space and also lifestyle change....
But I could have kept my older vehicle as it was fully paid off and I took really good care of it (it is an '03 RSX with low mileage) so it was running without issues and body was in great shape (no rust or accidents or dents).
But it would have sat there most of the time...so I gave it to my sister for a paltry sum......**sniff sniff**.....that little car was fun to drive and it is my first vehicle I bought brand new and fully paid off myself...
Now I am driving a 2012 Dodge Journey for the cargo space....it is an ok car but handles like a boat.....and the interior is cheeeeeeaaaaappppppp.........

We had a 2nd child and the Lincoln LS backseat wasn't very roomy so we jumped up to a '10 Grand Caravan, but the Lincoln had 192K on it so it was time. It was a fun car to drive though, I miss having some power when you step on the gas, although my pocket thanks me as the van is WAY easier on gas. Plus 8 hours to Windsor 4-5 times a year is much more pleasant in a van then the car.
Next inline is getting rid of the winter car, it's just rusting away, only has 125K which is pretty good for a '98 Oldsmobile Intrigue and the engine has been awesome in it as we have only replaced the battery, alternator and a pully on the accessory belt in the 8-9 years we've had it. Time for a compact car for around the city.
