Hi there!

Our lacie drive has started giving a burning smell when turned on. I took it out of the enclosure and connected it using another one and it still smoked...so I'm pretty sure it's toast.

Looking for a good data recovery service and approximate price range. I realize it'll be a few hundred dollars though, and that's ok.

Thanks in advance!

I think you are probably looking at $800. That is the cheapest estimate I received when I needed something done.

Heve you checked out Spin-Rite data recovery tool? Heven't needed to use it myself, but I've read some good reviews of this.

Chances are that PCB is the part that's smoking. Depending on what drive you have, you may have some luck finding a replacement PCB on ebay, replace it yourself, and see if the drive starts working again. In worst case, you'll be extra $50 out. Just make sure you buy the exact PCB as the one you have on the drive - it must be the same revision etc.
Don't have any recommendations on data recovery though. Having a backup of all my data, never lost anything of importance, so didn't have to deal with those services.
