Need to replace my good ol' reliable Linksys WRT54G. As much as it is still kicking to this day, and even still streams video to my Samsung WiFi Bluerays, the HD content is having some issues. I was thinking about this one as I want to also be able to plug in a hd and/or printer.

Thoughts anyone?

If you don't mind spending $50 more, go for the Apple Airport Extreme router. You can order it from apple.com, and if you are "student" it will cost you around $179 including tax.
This router will reach signal farthest and easiest to configure, if you have iphone, you may not even use computer to configure it. I am myself not apple product user except for this router.

lifehacker recently posted up their top five routers , maybe you can base your decision from there http://lifehacker.com/5920709/five-best-home-wi+fi-routers

Thanks! Funny thing that the first three listed are my current and plan-to-possibly-buy routers.

Looking at getting a new router aswell, a few Netgear and Asus model's seem to be getting good reviews.

Looking at this review (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/linksys_e4200_review) I'm tempted to go with the linksys e4200 router. It seems to have twice the speed at distances of around 60ft which is invaluable to anyone who lives in a house.

After some recent reviews on that exact model on this forum, and the recent backlash due to the the forced updates and intrusion of privacy by 'Cisco', I would stay away from Linksys. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/07/freeing-your-router-from-ciscos-anti-porn-pro-copyright-cloud-service/

It's unfortunate as before the cisco association, they were rock solid.

I'm almost confident I am going with the apple as I have been hearing nothing but good about them (other than price of course). ;)

If you don't need Wireless N.

Find routers on Kijiji that support OpenWRT or Tomato firmware...

My current WRT54G supports them doesn't it (whatever they are)? What exactly will that do for my range, speed, or streaming hd?

I own a few Linksys routers that support tomato and openwrt. You just get a huge number of features that you usually don't find in consumer grade routers.

I'd go for the Asus RT-66u and flash DD-WRT on it (or even the 56u but with other custom firmware).

The main features I want are at least 300 mbps, gigabit for my NAS and dual band to stream HD. I got tired of looking for a cheap router (to stream HD from a NAS to a jailbroken ATV2).. so I just bought this Asus 56u from Bestbuy.ca. It's only $110 there and listed at $137 at most other places.

It seems to be the only one that's consistently well reviewed...

Apple Airport Extreme router would be better.

Apple Airport Extreme router would be better.

I'm not particularly pro-Apple or pro-PC... i use an iphone 4 and have an ipad.. but use a dell laptop. and I'm familiar with changing router settings...

so the extra $30 for a refurb or $70 seems kinda steep.

also, i'm not sure if it's overkill but the asus model seems to perform better in benchmarks... http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/asus-rt-n56u-dual/4505-3319_7-34200558-2.html. even if the performance is unnecessary.. $109 for the 56u seems to be a decent price for something that's reviewed relatively well...

i just bought a NEW 5th gen Airport Extreme for $129 plus tax ... at that price it was a "no brainer" really
