building a system for my mother in law.

had a lga1366 i7-920 and asus p6t6 ws revolution to start with.

have 2 different sets of 3x 2gb ram to test out.
both only register 2gb of ram.

is this a motherboard or cpu problem?
isnt the mem controller on the cpu with this line of cpus?

any help is appreciated.

Looks like the memory controller is built-in.

I have never worked with triple-channel boards but is it possible to only use 1 or 2 sticks of ram at a time?

Are you using a program like CPU-Z or PC Wizard to see how much memory is being reported? What does BIOS say about memory?

hardoc and asus forums are filled with plp have problems with x58 boards.

bios only shows 2gb of ram.right now ive got windows 8 64bit preview running, but ive got an official windows 7 professional 64bit waiting.

alittle more info.

im a long time system builder but ive gone from fixing PCs to fixing homes, namely mine.
i havent had my hands in a computer in over 2 yrs, but i know how to troubleshoot and check things out.

ive tested it out with 1, 2 and 3 sticks of ram and always just 1 stick is seen.

other boards advise to rip it all out and test it out on a bench and carefully check cpu pins on motherboard and reseat cpu heatsink.

next step would be to manually set voltage and timings for ram in the bios.
