Originally I was thinking of driving to Gananoque and doing the 1000 islands ferry but then I realized I could cross the US border a little further along and then possibly drive back to Toronto on the US side of the lake.

Has anyone done this? Is there anything worth seeing? Maybe some good shopping on the US side on the way to Buffalo? I will be going with my wife and 9 month old son. I figure I could do it in 3 days and 2 nights so it doesn't seem to tiresome.

Thanks in advance.

Haven't done this trip but you can stop at the Waterloo Premium Outlets (www.premiumoutlets.com/waterloo/) near Rochester/Syacuse NY for shopping. The finger lakes in that area are worth visiting.

3 days?? I can easily spend 3 days in just the finger lakes region alone!
We did a tour around Georgian Bay in 1 week, and even then we had to skip many places. Lake Ontario is much bigger!

Oh yes I have heard of the finger lakes. Do you recommend a certain area at which to stay in that region? Thanks!

I happend to stay in Victor at Holiday Inn Express. There are places closer (i.e. in Watkins Glen, Ithaca etc) but this suited our needs for a few nights. I believe I booked it through priceline. It got good reviews in tripadvisor.
