I have a day off on Thursday and my girlfriend wants to go clothes shopping in Buffalo NY. I've never been there and I said why not. But were should I go to find good deals and what outlets should I look for?
Also are we exempt from any sales tax if we come from Canada and do we have to pay any fees once we cross back the border into Canada ?
Thank you.

If you live in London, I suggest you go to Birch Run in Flint instead

Frankly, the 'deals' in Buffalo aren't that great.. Pittsburgh (Grove City) was way better... (~3.5 hour drive?)
Plus, you get access to a few US Costco's there too.. (If you have a membership)
0~24hr $0
24~48 hr $200
While this is true, there's kind of an unwritten rule (and definitely YMMV), that under $60-$80, they'll probably just let you pass..
About a month ago, I went to pick up some stuff I had shipped, ~$100 of electronics, via the Whirlpool (Nexus) bridge, and they didn't care at all (4 hours over in the US).
Then about 3 weeks ago, we bought about $80 of clothing (for the kid), went through Rainbow Bridge, and was waived right through as well (2 hours).
I have been asked to go in and pay when I had about $160 of stuff before..

I apologize for hijacking the thread, but:
When you buy stuff do you still use the Nexus lane? Do you fill out a declaration?
I've done it three ways; When all I have is groceries I have used the lane and been chastised for not filling in a declaration even though no taxes or duties are payable (because it messes up the statistics, apparently). When I only have had groceries and used the conventional lane they've sometimes asked why I didn't use the nexus lane. When I have had a small amount of dutyable items I have been variously waved through and stopped and asked to pay taxes - it depends on the officer.
My question; "When there is no tax or duty due do you know for certain if it is appropriate to use the Nexus lane"?

I am in buffalo as I write this, went to fashion outlet yesterday, quite a few stores were going 50% to 60% off, e.g. Nike, Nordics. One exception deal was Tommy Bahamas was closing, about 80% to 90%, if you like their style, good quality of fabric though, other big fashion brands such as Calvin Chain, Tommy Hilfiger, Polo were no surprise, buy one get second half, 30% off.
Hope that helps.

If you go over $200, what taxes do you pay when entering Canada? Is it HST or something else? And do you pay for the portion over $200 or for the whole thing?
Thank you all.

It is HST on those items that are made in north america. on clothes (most are made elsewhere) you COULD get charged duty as well (usually 6.1 percent) but most officers arent that keen on the classification.
When you go over the $200 exemption, the law reads that you are to pay on the entire declaration. Again, some officers utilize discretion....

Also don't forget the exemption is per person not per vehicle, so the two of you would get $400 together if you stayed overnight.
