Does anyone remember anything about the former mall on the southeast corner of Finch and Weston?

Judging from the sign outside and recalling memories of driving past there when I was a kid, it went bankrupt in the last decade or so.

I'm not used to seeing such large lots stay vacant for so long. It sort of looks post-apocalyptic.

Does anyone have stories or old pics?

I think there was some old decrepit Toronto mall that was used in the filming of a zombie movie, maybe this one is it?

was it some factory outlet shop?

edit

Don't know how far correct is this.

Finch West Mall (demolished) (Toronto, Ontario)

An undeveloped property formerly occupied by the Finch West Mall, a petrol station, and a McDonald's which was superseded by a new location across the intersection at Finch and Weston. The property has remained undeveloped following razing of the mall structure in July 2006, which originally opened in the late 1960s with Zellers as its largest tenant, and later a Canadian Tire. The McDonald's, which was razed soon after, opened in October 1973.

There are plans unveiled with the Emery Village BIA to develop the property, now owned by Medallion Properties, into a complex with 1,235 homes and a piazza at the corner.

I took a bike ride there today and snapped some pics.

The building isn't there anymore. Kinda wish I could've seen it. Abandoned buildings are awesome.

Nothing really interesting to see. I was hoping to see a body or at least some heroin needles, but nothing. Just grass growing through the pavement, garbage, and a lot of wood. If you ever need wood for a campfire and can find a way to get it out of there, it's a gold mine...or wood mine.

Pics are nothing special so don't expect much.

Mc Ds and a CT and a small gas station on the corner. Friday, Saturday and Sunday on holidays, after 11:00 PM cars used to meet there and stay until 4:00 AM. Some cars raced on Signet, some cars watched, some cars had pounding car stereos.

Across the street to the west was (is?) a Mr.Sub where all the street bikes used to meet. So many, you had to walk around because you couldn't fit between. Some of them were pretty much drag bikes.

Some of the cars at Weston and Finch were on trailers as they had just finished the day racing at Cayuga. Some of them were on trailers because they were illegal to drive on the street... even though they ultimately would come off for 15 minutes or so.

In it's heyday you would find two hot dog vendors, a pizza truck, an ice cream truck and a catering truck in the lot at 2AM.

Most of the vendors were the sons of vendors that would take their dad's vending vehicles and make extra money at night while their father' slept.

The lot used to be in the Toronto Star almost yearly. The police were there in the lot most of the time, looking to ticket. As soon as imports being driven by younger kids as if they were in a video game started being in many accidents and the public called that street racing, they shut the place down.

They needed permission from the lot owner to do so because it is private property.

I used to live within walking distance of that mall.
How many times I recall walking up those "SAFE" and STEEP INCLINE rotten wooden steps to the McDonalds! lol
Canadian Tire was the mainstay of the mall, and there was a full serve gas station at the corner (who allowed the WORLD'S BEST baby strollers to be sold on their lot. lol)
Typical stores inside, barber, jewellery, discount stores, etc.

I believe politician Georgio intends to rebuild the whole area into, Emery Village, or something to that affect? Don't recall exactly.

There wouldn't be a need for that mall anymore as the Jane/Finch mall is two lights down! Though the area seems very nice I don't know why they keep talking about it on the news......
