I have a good friend who has Borderline Personality Disorder. I am encouraging him to get diagnosed and treated.

However, he has aspirations to work in the Army or Police force (as back up in case his current field of study doesn't work out). Was wondering if this diagnosis negatively impacts employment as I'm sure the Government would do a background check prior to hiring?

The government/police cannot look into his private medical records and they are not allowed to ask.

He will however fail the psych evaluation for the police/army. My bi-polar niece tried to get in
the army and luckily she flunked the psych eval...I would not want the girl handling
automatice weapons so it's all good

edit to add...I should say 'maybe' fail the psych...it's not like they don't let the wrong people in
sometimes eg Russell Williams

How do you know he has borderline personality disorder? I hate it when people throw around mental health diagnosis...
Because even if he has it and his symptoms are mild, no way in hell would he even qualify for such work as the illness is quite descructive.

There's no psychiatric evaluation to get into the Canadian Forces. They do a medical but it's just stuff like your medical history, blood pressure, etc.

If someone has mental illness I would strongly recommend that they speak to current members of the CF or police and their current medical team to determine whether or not this is the correct career for them.
