View Full Version : Good pub to go to in TO

Got a field view suite at the Rogers Center tonight. After the game I'll be looking to go for some pints somewhere. Any good pubs downtown that would be open tonight? Doesn't have to be busy, but I don't want to sit in a dead bar either.
I'm not looking for a dance club or high class bar/lounge. A sports bar or pub is what I want. I've been to the Loose Moose too many times so I'm looking for somewhere else.

Seconding Real Sports.
If you don't mind a bit further away from the ACC, the beer menu at Bar Volo (http://barvolo.com/) is pretty epic.

isn't it tough to actually get seats at Real Sports on any "happening" nights?
Bar Volo is good, service could be better
Recently, I've enjoyed C'est What and the front st Jack Astor's

Real Sports is a very nice place but as mentioned, they get packed really quickly.
There are also many microbreweries scattered around the core, maybe check those out.

The Office pub (http://www.theofficepub.ca/menus.php) on John is also a good option. Actually that stretch of John has a few okay bars.

something close to you..
Pub - Black Bull Tavern. Great place. About 4 blocks north of the Rogers Centre, just keep walking north on Blue Jays Way until you hit Queen St. It's on the NE corner. Huge patio, always busy.. casual dress

Black Bull is going to be rammed tonight, especially after a game. Plus it's nothing special, so waiting 20+ minutes for a table there is rarely worth it. The only time we go there is if we happen to walk by and spot an empty table on the patio with no lineup.

Pick your poison... office pub isn't great in my opinion, unless you want to be surrounded by metros/people more concerned with their looks rather than having a good time

Maybe it's just me but I don't care who's around in a situation like that. As long as they have drinks and I don't have to wait for a table I could care less who else is there. Black Bull has its share of 'metros' as well ;)

The Jack Astor's at Front and University is pretty good (I know it's not really a pub).

the main level is good, but the upstairs is definitely not a pub/sports bar like setting.

I imagine it would get packed for nba, hockey, or ufc, but i kind of doubt it for baseball. Even then he's going after the game and some tables may free up, i don't think it would be too bad. i would chance it.

Last thing I want is a pub full of pretentious people. I'll probably check out the black bull. In staying 2 nights now.
Any good comedy clubs in Toronto worth going to? What's a good restaurant to eat lunch or dinner at? Nothing overly fancy, but nothing too common that I would have back home in Kingston. I went to chilis today for lunch and loved it, but that's too far from downtown. Anywhere like Chilis that's downtown?

Shaner, for some good restaurants next to each other check out some of the ones on King west by the Princess of Wales theatre. Check out Fred's Not Here - decent place with good sizeable portions. They're all within walking distance so you will have choices.
Real Sports isn't a real pub - it's more of a upscale bar and has that lounge feel. It's a good place if you're in your mid-late twenties though.
Check out the Black Hoof too if you can, it's a very well known place that you definitely will not have back in Kingston. (http://theblackhoof.com/)

Second City is pretty close to the Rogers Centre... Thats if you like sketch comedy and improve. Wayne Gretzky's is there too. That restaurant is pretty good, but nothing memorable.

I've never been, but if you prefer standup instead there's a yuk yuks on Richmond St (North East of second city) no more than a 5 minute walk from second city. It's something like $10-$12/person. check out the site

This would've been a pretty messed up night to be on the Black Bull (or any) patio.

If you want something different, should try Korean Grill house on Queen St. near University Ave. It's all you can eat bbq (thing is, you have to grill yourself).
http://www.koreangrillhouse.com/qn_home.htm
Most of the thing you'll find different in TO is ethnic food and some 'higher-end' type bistros.
As mentioned, some good restaurants at King and John St. There's a southern Italian one I went to before was pretty good (I had some pasta.. but the sauce was really good) called Kit Kat
http://www.kitkattoronto.com/home.html
Never had, but supposed really good Thai food. Khao San Road
http://www.khaosanroad.ca/
For lunch, there's places like Burrito Boys or a Poutine place that's popular on Adelaide just West of University Ave.

This is a bit of a walk for you from the Rogers centre but I like the Duke pubs...
There is the Duke of Devon at Bay/Wellington.....Irish pub with decent beer and the service is excellent....the girls are easy on the eyes and very friendly:
Duke of Devon
66 Wellington Street West
Toronto, ONT
Irish Embassy is also good but not as many "easy on the eyes" wait staff and the place is smaller too...
In terms of food, you can always try Joey's is near the Eaton Centre, more of a upscale resto but pretty good food and service...though a bit pricey
There is also Earl's, pretty decent as well.
If you want a decent Montreal-smoked meat sandwich, Dunn's Famous isn't bad...
Dunn's Famous
284 King St W
Toronto, ON M5V 1J2
Gluck!

+1 but I though it a bit far from Skydome. You can try the rabbit!!!
Good and not so common beers available. It's a "Public House", the upstairs is like a cool living room with a rooftop patio.

Other than some having cuter waitresses than others, all pubs are about the same to me. A chair and some beer on tap and some comfort food, most likely fried, from the kitchen. A million of them.

Is it legal to drink from a paper bag in Canada like on The Wire?
If so that's my vote.

Against The Grain is a really nice place to drink and hang out (and eat too).
Of course, it's a bit out of the "downtown core".
