My son who will turn 18 in Nov. just got his license. We have 2 cars, 2000 Toyota and 2007 Civic coupe that we just bought with him in mind and with the condition that he helps pay for. My wife and I are principal drivers on the civic but we want to add him as a 3rd driver and hoping it won't be that expensive. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. We're in Montreal.

This is RFD, a place where people look for help not to be taken for a ride, in other words ideas on how to save money so I was looking for something like This:put your son as casual driver under the civic or toyota.

Not this:Why do u need help? Insurance is dead cheap here...

or this:you can come to toronto if you wanna get scam like most of us here

If you don't want people trolling you, then you should have made the post clearer. All you said was "insurance help". How are people supposed to help you if you don't even have an actual question for everyone?

EDIT: Just add your son as a secondary driver like another poster mentioned. That shouldn't raise your premiums by much.

You can't say that's illegal unless you can prove the OP's son is the real primary driver.

The OP only said they bought the Civic with his son in mind... doesn't mean his son necessarily has to drive the Civic the most.... literally speaking.

I was just pointing out the caveat with what some people were suggesting. OP can decide whether it applies to his situation and if he wants to take the risk if it does.

with insurance the best advice is call as many as you can to makes submission. It can goes from simple to triple from one to another.

Update. Since we have 2 cars with 2 different policies from 2 different firms, we ended up adding our son as a driver on the older car for about $35 extra per month because of a feature on the older car policy that covers a user when driving a rental or a borrowed car. Now, whenever he drives the civic, he is "borrowing" it. If we had added him to the Civic policy, the cost would have been an extra $76 a month.

If I were you, I'd double check before you assume that that is legit. In Ontario, If your insurance is from two different firms as you say, and your son is driving the Civic and gets in an accident, the firm that covers the Civic may not cover you nor your son because you failed to disclose to them that your son, who lives with you actually drives the Civic and is not listed as a driver.

You can't just have insurance on one car and "borrow" the other -> especially if you live in the same house. I assume that that's the same across Canada and the United STates.

Yes this may work but your son will have no record of prior insurance in his name in the future. Why not just put him as primary driver on the older car and drop some of the coverage to save money. A 2000 Toyota has little value in case of a total loss to an insurance company. Also you should consolidate your policies with one broker, most have nice discounts when insuring 2 or more cars and even more if you include a home policy with them.

"your son will have no record of prior insurance in his name in the future. Why not just put him as primary driver on the older car and drop some of the coverage to save money"

He will be a primary driver on the older car, that's why we're paying extra. We did shop around. The difference in premiums between the two companies was exactly double so we picked the cheaper one.

"So many people like the OP look for ways to scam insurance"

Sorry to disappoint you, buddy, no scam here. We are trying to save money and teach our son to be money smart. Isn't that what RFD is all about. We bought the civic because he likes it and he will be paying for it for with us. This will be our 5th civic in 20 years.

Then you should be fine. When you say "shop around" you did check more than 2 companies? I'm shopping for a new provider since RBC decided to raise my premium by 25% despite no claims/points the past 10 years. Excuse was high and repeated claims for my model. I've gotten 9 quotes ranging from $600-$1800 for exactly the same coverage on a base '10 Vibe. I'll be going with a broker this time. The term "shop around" rings true when it comes to insurance. Every company seems to rate the same models differently.

Why dont you put him primary on the Civic if that is the car he will be primarily driving?

Does it sound right to have primary on the Corolla and borrow the Civic 365 days a year?

Do you own an insurance company or something?
Who cares! Not your problem.

In Ontario, at least for all of my family's past policies, 'borrowed' clause only covers those over 25. Might want to check that.

I like Costco too, but it isn't the only and last place I shop. If I find a deal that beats Costco and thanks to RFD, I often do, then I jump on it. Yes insurance is cheap here but does that mean I shouldn't look for the least expensive option?

in ontario you are suppose to disclose all drivers/vehicles in the household.... if he ends up driving a vehicle that he's not disclosed on for what ever reason...this could result in an issue - you still need to tell the company he's not listed on that he is listed on your other policy

Another cheaper option is just have your son grounded til he's 25y/o.... insurance will be much cheaper.... yay...

Seriously, nothing wrong to find the absolutely cheapest way. But I guess it's somewhat preaching to the wrong crowd here., esp after mentioning the merely $35/month (or even $76 if done properly) extra premium for a 17y/o...

LOL... on a serious note, not disclosing the boy to the other insurer could be a mega issue in the future..

Actually if you're married it's cheaper for insurance than being 25. I didn't get any grand discount with a clean driving record. Get your son hitched for cheap rates and you'll be fine.

So ground him til 25y/o and then get a mail-order bride from Russia?
