My fiance and I have moved from BC to Edmonton and have gotten our car inspected and now need insurance since our BC stuff runs out in Aug. Just not too sure where to start, should we just go to a broker or is there a short list of companies to check out and ones to stay away from? Not used to having to worry about it coming from BC and our condo insurance was never enough to worry too much about where we got it from. We are both 29, it's my car though he's the primary driver, it's a 2011 ford fiesta and we both have excellent driving records. He does have one ticket from the last 5 years (not stopping at a railway crossing), I've never gotten a ticket and the accident that totaled my first car was 100% the other guys fault. This moving provinces is a bit of a pain and still a bit overwhelming. though it is neat seeing all the differences. Oh we are renting right now but will be buying a house hopefully within a month or two (Finish our old condo's sale mid aug) so will eventually need house insurance.

Go to www.kanetix.ca, get quote. Choose whichever provider you feel most comfortable with. If you're a Uni grad, Monnex has decent group rates that may not be the lowest but their customer service is located in Calgary, so chances are extremely high that you can understand them over the phone.

Canadian Direct is a local provider that you can try as well.

Sometimes paying more for better service is worth it.

Also try www.insurancehotline.com - you'll get quotes that are compared against over 30 insurance companies!

Good luck.

We are deffiently willing to pay a bit more for better service. Heh, kanetix came up with ones all well over 2k where insurance hotline came up with ones for less then 1500. Though I guess we do need to go in somewhere to get our licence plate and finish getting the car registered in AB.

For some reason Kanetix qouted me like 4x what direct calls to the companies did. I'll second Monnex, and also suggest Johnson Insurance - they seem to be good price-wise, can't comment on service.

Did you get both of your driver abstract and claim experience letter from ICBC? You will need it to get better rates in Alberta. See link below.
http://www.insuranceab.com/how-to-switch-auto-insurance-from-bc-to-alberta.html

Also are both of you getting your AB license soon?

PM me if you need help.

We already got our AB licences, that took forever because the poor guy put my fiance's birthday in for mine so that took a while to fix. That's a handy link, I had only been able to find the generic moving to AB stuff. We have our abstracts somewhere but still need to call and get the claim experience letter, had been told they can e-mail/fax it no problem.

It looks like my fiance can go through Monnex through work (CN Rail) so maybe we will just do that. The online quote comes up a few hundred dollars cheeper then what I paid through ICBC.

Try TD Meloche Monnex. I'm 24 with no prior insurance records and was pretty amazed at my rate. 2K seems a bit excessive for someone who I'm guessing is older than me and with prior insurance.

welcome to edmonton
You can never go wrong with state farm, but I am pretty sure there is cheaper insurance out there.

OP do you have a professional degree? The reason I ask us some insurance companies take this into consideration and you will have some discounts applied to the rates. I am with TD Meloche Monnex and they are great.

Either you're really risk averse or accident-prone, whichever... don't let them know because you're basically telling them to charge you more! :D

We moved from SK 10 years ago and had to deal with the same thing. Do what we did, go to the yellow pages, and get a bunch of quotes.

We have been with ING Novex since we moved, which is now Impact. Good rates with them and have had good luck working out deals etc

Alright, well if anyone is curious or just for anyone who googles this thread we ended up with TD Meloche Monnex their rate with renters insurance was cheeper then everyone else and gave us more stuff. AMA wouldn't even give us car replacement stuff on our 2011 car we bought from a dealership in 2010 when we had that on our BC policy. We did also check out a broker but they wern't much cheeper then AMA. Most people wanted over 2k and with Monnex it was around 1900 for car + renters insurance. It had turned out that an accident he was in which didn't effect his BC insurance did affect his grid thing out here. Just gotta go in and register the car and get our AB places now. Thanks for all the help everyone.

How much is your tenant insurance? usually I could do that between $110-200 with 30,000 contents coverage, water damage, 1M liability, 1st claim waiver, etc.

It's less then 200. We wern't too worried since it was all still cheeper then what others wanted for just auto and we should be moving within a couple months once we find a place to buy.
