parade-goers will be searched for weapons, drugs and alcohol
The search is going to be by the organizers, not the police,” Dr. Dhun Noria, acting chair of the Toronto Police Services Board said...
Now good luck with that.
No one is touching me.

Now why would anybody bring those things to a nice family-oriented event organized for the neighbourhood kids?

I think it only applies to the stadium and it will be security staff hired + organizers hired to do the searches. I doubt the organizers would conduct random searches throughout the parade route.

So basically the VIP's sitting in the stands, so older people who need to sit and fairly rich people. Definitely the type to shoot up the parade

As someone who lives in the neighbourhood near the Ex where this fiasco ends up, I wonder the same thing. All it does is royally p!$s off the residents who are displaced by the rush of idiots and morons to the area. If it were not for my wife being pregnant, we would be headed out of town until this whole thing blew over.

The idea behind this event is fine and dandy but the reality is that this event is taken over by hooligans every year. Having said that, I will still be going this year. There are some fine gyals there.

Do you have proof that Caribana loses money? I don't see how it could

Because it's worth paying for and brings in buttloads of revenue, pun intended. Call it an investment.

It does. The organizers are pretty terrible, though maybe this isn't the case with a bank sponsor backing it.

All Im asking for is some facts not a random opinion , Its the single biggest tourist event this city has to offer I just find it hard to believe its losing money with all the tourism revenue it brings to the city

I dont have a link (and too lazy to find one) but he is right. I remember reading about it losing money and without city funding they could not run it.

Yes this and pride receive funding from the city. I assumed you missed the news articles about the city pulling funding for pride if a certain group held a protest.
I say $50 bet for one person being shot and at least 5 wounded during the event.

so now you agree it's losing money
why is it hard for you to accept simple facts?
it's not my investment. I do not see any penny out of it. it's my loss

Thats a myth there is no way this festival is losing money, the largest festival in North America, Scotia isn't stupid, why would they invest to take it over if it was perpetually losing money. Thier marketing budget could prolably pay for most of it. The amount of revenue it brings to the city/province/country, everyone, even if the city funds it look at how much they will receive in taxes that tourists pay. I know a few people who work closely with industries associated with caribana and they say they make enough money in the 2 weeks of caribana that they only have to work 1-2 months out of the year. Its like their christmas/boxing week. Everyone gets paid, think about drivers, caterers, strippers, escorts, promoters, dj's, dancers, msuicians, photographers, people in the service industry....
Even if Scotia ran the festival into the ground since since Scotia owns it now they could probably write off a lot of the costs and when was the last time you heard of a Canadian bank really losing money?
Also no matter what happens, this festival isn't going anyway despite what ever concerns arise. The Sad thing is, there could be 1 casualty or 100,000. I guarantee it will most likely go on year after year.

The security can only search people in the grandstands. They are not allowed to search people just standing around along the parade route. Thus the searches will be useless and only done to give the illusion that they are doing proactive.
What bothers me is the police chief is putting the entire police force on mandatory overtime to have more officers available throughout the city during Carabana. And who is paying for this overtime? Taxpayers of course.

If they are making so much profit why can't the people running the festival pay for all the security needed?

The argument is that they do, indirectly, through tourists. But I think the event has private security as well.

This is a great idea. Are they going to search the parade-goers all year long, or is this just for the duration of the parade? I heard they are hiring more police officers to patrol the affected neighbourhoods.

Actually Pride generates $85 million in hotel and restaurants bookings plus the surroundings businesses do a thriving business weeks before the parade...Caribana does squat for the surrounding businesses and the attendees usually stay for 3 to 4 days max ...Pride gets funding for security and street cleaning thats it.....
